Hi Karl and Neil Truter,
I received your messages but from my side it is impossible to send a return message - so I decided to follow this route. It will be of interest for a number of Pajero owners.
The tanks that we build are made of 2mm stainless steel. Yes, they are heavy but the thickness makes for easy welding, they do not rust, can be used for fuel (petrol and diesel) and water and in most cases should outlast most Pajeros, and they are strong!! After testing my first fuel tank, I decided to weld two extra bolts to the tank. I took it out and being totally stupid and with my mind in absolute neutral stated welding. The second the welding torch touched the tank, the petrol vapours exploded and made the tank oval! I took it back home, pressed it as far as possible back into it's original shape and installed it. Since then it has been on a number of trips and is still not leaking.
We make the tanks as follow. I do the planning and measure and mark the stainless steel plate. Then I cut it to size, Johan is in charge of the bending the plate into the required shape (with my assistance). He then cut the holes (inlet and outlet). Hereafter it goes to Herman. He does the welding. From here I take it to my house to check for leaks (compressed air and as a final check, diesel). If there is a leak, back to Herman for more welding and the fitting of handles. The tanks are heavy and a bit ackward to carry. Hereafter to Gavin to make a bag/cover for the tank - if so required. Chris in the same factory makes the spacers to do a lift job on the Pajero.
The final step is when some bucks change hands and the new owner gets his tank.
It takes about 2 weeks to make a tank - it depends on the number of other jobs and the price is about R3000,00 per tank. This is dependant on the fittings required and the shape of the tank.
For myself, I have four tanks. Each holds about 100lit (2 x fuel and 2 x water). One fuel tank is basically semi-permanent in my Pajero (the one mentioned above) but it takes me about 30 minutes to take it out and to return the Pajero to it's normal state. The other fuel tank goes on the roof carrier for when we need more that 200lit between fuel stops. I have 3.8 GLS and at times it can get thirsty.
When we go on tour, I take the second row seats out and in it's place put either one or two 40 lit Engel fridges. One of my water tank then fits in next to the fridge(s). That is why I have two different shape water tanks.
Hope this is what you need,
Cloyd.

Sorry for only responding now... Had a busy weekend!
R3000 is quite a lot, but This is probably less than half some of the fitment guys would charge us (and you'd probably do a bette job
Anybody else keen to get in on this? Maybe we can make it a group buy?
