the gearbox solenoids receive 12 volts all the time when the ignition is on. The gearbox ecu then sends ground to the solenoid to activate it.
So if 4th and 5th shift is incomplete then either the solenoids are bad or there is either a 12v or ground connection that's faulty.
It is a fancy gearbox but should be easy to diagnose for a sparky.
It appears that the sensors were correct all the time. There was a problem inside the box, which has now been removed and sent to Johannesburg for an expensive rebuild. I believe the clutches were damaged due to a blocked oil feed and need to be replaced.
Anyway I have accepted their trade in offer and now have a 2009 GLX with 50000kms. I leave for Botswana next week.
Thanks to all for the replies.

Have just returned from a 8000km trip to Botswana and Capetown in my 'new' 2009 GLX. My faith in Pajero is restored. Car ran faultlessly and returned an average of 10.4km/100lts for the round trip with 2 jerry cans and a spare tyre on the roof and lots of use of the aircon.
As to the gearbox saga of the 2008 GLX.
The gearbox had the clutches replaced etc at a cost of some R34000 to the agents. Sound like it was a similar problem to bobguthrie above with oil feeds getting blocked and overheating. So it appears that the computers and sensors were right all along.
Anyway thanks to all for the feedback.
