Not sure how you are interpreting the difference. It's flat and covers a large portion of the bottom of the autobox sump. Presumably the ATF circulates upwards through the filter, hence the nasties are trapped below it and gravitate to the magnets.
But ... I have never stripped one myself - maybe @bosmanwp can add something to this?
