Hi Andrew.
That's a great idea, didn't check the service manual properly....
(RTFM)
Will do the check(s) tomorrow and report back asap.

Maybe check for fault codes again as well. Maybe it registered one again in the short while that it had power.
I would try and remove the ECU computer before I do more test as I am to believe that are also costly.

Ok some more feedback.
I checked all the connection to the injector pump that matched the service manual I had, but the engine speed sensor(s) plug was different, my pump has one plug and the manual has 2 separate plugs. There was also another plug on the pump that was not shown in the manual.
Fuel cut off solenoid:
Range 6.8 - 9.2ohm. actual 9.2ohm.
Timing control valve:
Range 10.8 - 11.2ohm. Actual 11.7ohm
GE actuator
Range 0.64 - 0.72ohm. Actual 4.4-104ohm (varies)
Fuel temperature
Range 1.4 - 2.6ohm. Actual 1.04ohm
Control sleeve position sensor:
Terminal 4 - 12:
Range 11.2 - 12.4ohm. Actual 49ohm
Terminal 4 - 8:
Range 5.6 - 6.2ohm. Actual 6.4ohm
Terminal 8 - 12:
Range 5.6 - 6.2ohm. Actual 42ohm
Timer piston position sensor:
Terminal 1 - 2:
Range 160 - 168ohm. Actual 173ohm
Terminal 1 - 3:
Range 80 - 84ohm. Actual 86ohm
Terminal 2 - 3:
Range 80 - 84ohm. Actual 86ohm
The 2 engine speed sensors do not match the manual I have, does anyone perhaps have an updated version?
From the tests it seems the GE actuator and control sleeve are buggered, the small difference in ohm in the others sensors I put down to my multimeter being out slightly.
Both of these are deep inside the pump it seems, nothing more I can do

Mmmm. Not good news. Hopefully it still carries a warantee after the last rebuild.
Funny though that it smoked/burned? When my GE actuator went south it threw an engine check light and I picked it up from the fault codes on the dash flash method. It did not smoke. Just lost power never to start again and turned over like yours, but no smoke or burning smell at all! Mine did also not pop any fuses when it went!

Nick,
Sounds like you have found the culprit.
I tried to find a later manual for you here:
http://manual.pajero4x4.ru/ but did not have any luck.
I have watched those in the know change most of the speed senors etc. on those pumps without taking the pump out. So maybe ask around of those with diesel expertise in your area if that is possible. If so, it could be way easier than trying to remove the pump and getting it up to Mitspro.

Some (possibly) relevant info on the Aussie forum:

Nick, I doubt that the increase in resistance on these components will lead to the severe electrical fault you described in the first post. Even if these component go "short-circuit" the way the ECU reads them should not see this result.
Did you turn on the ignition with all wiring unplugged from the pump? Maybe try it. I am pretty sure your fault will still be there!

(Have a fire extinguisher ready though!

)

This guy had smoke from his (Pajero's

) exhaust, Nick had smoke from an electrical fault in the engine bay.

I provided the link iro refurbishing injector pump and GE sensor / actuator - not because it represented identical symptoms.
If you read those various threads you will see:
1. ECU can throw a code 48 (GE sensor/ actuator)
2. Sometimes the error message has to do with speed sensors (easier and less costly to replace) and NOT to do with GE sensor / actuator
3. GE sensor / actuators do tend to fail more often around this age / mileage

Hi guys, thanks again for all the research and advice.
I have spoken to Freek jnr at mitspro, they say I am out of garentee period and even if I was in it they don't cover electrical failures...
It also makes sense that something else could have shorted out on the chassis frying the pump electrics.
What I have realised after many phone calls is that very few diesel pump specialists will touch the DiD motor or pump, even just to send it up to joburg to be refurbished, and it seems they really do not like working to with the zexel pump(- vloekwoord) .
I am going to use CL Diesel in Blackheath to remove the pump and send to Randburg Diesel for repair, and refit and test afterwards. They will also check the Pajero electrics and see what might have caused the GE actuator and control sleeve position sensor to fail so catastrophically (go up in smoke) and thus blowing the 20A main ECU fuse...
I recon this will be about R20k exercise unfortunately... Eish.
(i think I understand Cats point of view a little more in that my trust also being broken by my trusty Pajero...)
