I have just been for my fourth visit to a tire dealer. A different story each time, as usual.

The consensus on my Geolander G012s is the following: The tires are very susceptible to rotation and shock wear. As my shocks were not good, the tires wore unevenly. The regular rotation every 5000 kilos means that all the tires have the same wear. As a result all four tires have problems and cannot be balanced to give a smooth ride at 120kph although 100kph is fine.

Today a specialist looked at the tires and noticed that they were showing fine cracks. This is apparently due to the fact that they were now 4 years old and had the sun on them even though the car is parked under roof most of the time.

So now I need new tires. A set of new 275/65/17 Geolanders will cost me R10,336 all in. The dealer recommended I fit Hankooks instead. The price for a set of five 265/65/17 Hankook Dynapro ATMs will cost R15,064 all in. I need five because Hankook does not make the 275 size and I will need a spare as well.

I was quite happy with the Geolanders for the first few years. It is only when they started to wear that the problems all set in.

Any comments on how the Hankooks will compare to the Geolanders? Especially when it comes to noise and comfort.

How do you find Mufasa? Why are they so much cheaper? I am quite close to them, so I might just pop in there.

Only heard good things about them, ordered my tyres on the 11th and they just phoned me today the 20th to say they have arrived and are ready for fitment. They are a web-based business, don't have a premises with all the overheads that go with it, thus low prices. They have a deal with automart in durban Road for the wheel fitment and alignment, so my tyres are waiting for me there.

Kennekam. I got the tyres at Koenic Wheel Warehouse in Van Riebeck street Edenvale. Just completed a week in Kruger and found them to be very comfortable and quiet on the tar. Can't really judge the gravel at Kruger as speeds are reduced but have no complaints.

I presume you are referring to the Geolanders?

Just picked up my new tyres this morning, need to drive another few thousand km on my BFG before I put them on though.

Think I have narrowed it down. In more ways than one. I am going back to 265/65/17 from my current 275/65/17. There are so few options for the wider tire and will be impossible to replace when over landing.

So now the choice is between the Geolanders that I know and like - when new - and the Hankooks which is being recommended to me by two dealers. They are almost a R1000 more per tyre. Apart from the stronger shoulder design, I cannot see where the extra money is going.

Does anyone have experience going from Geolanders to Dynapro ATMs? Or vice versa? My main interests are noise, comfort and resistance to punctures.
