I replaced shocks at 280000 km, again with oem. Front shocks were gone, but rear shocks were still good.

HI
I changed mine at 205000Km when right front started knocking - cracked shock housing was issue. Fitted only the front standard OEM shocks. Rears were fine.
Previous tyres were BF Goodrich all terrain
Current is Cooper AT3

Richard, are you saying that with 205k km, your original rear shocks were still ok ?

Where do you get OEM ie KYB shocks other than the dealers ? Do the average shock replacement places have KYB's ?

210000 km front started knocking. Went to Mikem where they took them out, kaput, you can even see where the metal was hitting on metal through the bush.
They are putting old man elu coils on the back, mikem shocks back and front and all suspension bushes. Will collect the car on Monday and report back.

I wasn't aware that Mikem made shocks. Aren't you referring to Bilsteins?

Yes, you're right Kurt, it's Bilstein.

What do you check for? How will you know if its faulty?

Thanks

So the answer I get here is that you wait for knocking sound when going over a speedbump...?

I am also worried as my SWB is at 150k and I believe it is with the original shocks. Planning a long road trip through the dunes of Namibia and wondering if the suspension shouldn't be checked?

I'm not saying preventative maintenance shouldn't be done, but why scratch?
Consider airbags in the rear to help keep the tupperware off the dunes. That Shorty (and I LUV them) is going to be tightly packed with fuel, water and provisions.

I have raised the car with spacers. but ja space is already keeping me awake at night - really I got up at 03h00 and designed a packing system  .

I need to take 100L of Diesel in Jerry cans. 60L of Water. 20L of Oil. this all inside the car.

I have a small roof rack but my second spare wheel will take up all of the space and I don't want to be top heavy in the dunes.
