Got feedback from Arnold at MITSITECH re; Timing chain in 3.2 l engine .

QUOTE: "The Timing chain it selves has a life span of +/- 300000km. You will start hearing a clear grgrg –grgrg- grgrg noise at idle and between 1800 and 2800 rpm when traveling constantly from the front of the engine if and when the chain has an issue.
The top small guide unit inside the tappet cover lasts about 150000km, we however check it at every service interval at us being every 10000km. " UNQUOTE

According to the service schedule for Pajeros with 3.2 l engine.......service intervals should be 15.000 km however it is maybe worthwile to err on the cautious side and service every 10.000 km.
My personal opinion is that the use of FULLY SYNTHETIC engine oils and the use of 50ppm or even 10ppm Diesel could justify a service every 15.000 km as prescribed by the ServiceBooklet.
However any use in really "dirty/ dusty" environs neccesitates a service every 10.000km or even sooner.

A belt. Actually two. There is a balancer shaft belt as well.
