I have used a similar principle, just not a full spare wheel, but simply a second tyre strapped to the existing spare wheel to try and keep the weight down, which worked well, but still concerned about the weight on the door though. On this trip I had 7 punctures, and used both spares, but these were the std Geolander G039 HT tyres, which were shredded from the Kaokoland trip and van Zyls pass. The route we took to Opuwa was where most of the damage was done and we got 3 punctures there, and the tyres were more noisy than the current BFG AT's. There is no doubt that 2 pares are required (not on all trips), still cautious of weight on the door and hinges, so only do this when absolutely necessary, had I not done this, the trip would have been very different.

My 1 tyre had a puncture with 5 plgs in 1 hole, and with this one as my only spare left, my only good tyre let go still 80km in Botswana and still had to get to PTA on a Sunday at 19h00 with no spare and we were solo on the return trip, 2 small slow punctures on 2 wheels, and a new tyre with 5 plugs in 1 hole, and still had around 400km to go..... and no more spares.... not a good place, but the 2 spares got us home, just......

Ok the decision was to go to Nam on the current tyres with still around 20000km to go or replace before and replace the damaged tyres after return, so we went with the existing and replaced all upon return.

All long trips now always go with 1 Spare wheel and an extra spare tyre... can always get these debeaded in the bush somehow - saw this on a video, how hard can it be....
