Re: WC GTG: Atlantis Dunes 13 Feb 2011 (Sunday)
Hi Ned / Anton

I was sorry my SLR camera's batteries died on me, at the outset, on the GTG........next time I'll try to do better at taking pics. :geek:

The film clips were all taken with the cell !! Not too shabby, methinks

Anyway....anxiously awaiting the next meet 8-)

No, they're great, thanks. Stunning what a cellphone can do nowadays.

We must get back to Atlantis soon!

Achille,

You should have said something, I always carry a few sets of charged rechargables loaded in my cubbyhole.

Ned,

I think the SLR uses a custom battery.

Hi All

Could you please comment on the diesel vehicle's performance compared to petrol engine vehicle's performance in the dunes.

And lets try to keep it objective.. ;)

Hi Skillie,

Dunes definitely Petrol, reasoning is, A: Momentum needs to be acquired, and B: It needs to be maintained, this is where the petrol comes in, you need to be able to maintain high revs without dropping gears 3/4s of the way up.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Regards,
Skillie,

Only Ralf had a 3.2 (Gen 3) diesel there - the rest were petrols. The diesel got everywhere, but I do believe the petrols got up the dunes slightly easier. But the same time I must say that the diesel is a new car, and maybe Ralph is slightly more cautious than those of us with older cars. I know I would have been more cautious with a newer car! Maybe it would have been more objective if there were more diesels, including Gen 2's.

I do recon that the dunes require high KW, rather than torque...

Hi Skillie,

In general the Diesel handled fine. Perhaps not quite as effortlessly as the Petrols ;) , but excellently nonetheless. I think there are several factors that may have contributed to this (thanks Anton and Ned for pointing some of these out ... ):

1. More torque but less KW (ran our of rev's on Dogs Leg. That said I really would like to try it again with my new found experience .... )
2. More cautious (had to simply push harder to get up the slipface in the pic beneath)
3. Learning how top use the Paji in the dunes (when to use diff, how to use the auto gearbox to hold gears etc)
4. No mods (GLX, standard except for Bridgestone 265x70x16 AT's)
5. Somehow always managed to be close to the back of the pack and got to drive in the churned up sand (and boy can those Petrols churn up the sand ...)
6. Lack of driver skill
7. Lack of driver determination (or bigger gonads perhaps.... )

But, got most places, with no damages, and, had just as much fun as the Petrols did .... 8-)

Looking forward to next time, hopefully there will be more Diesels this time round!
BTW - I was also the only Gen3 LWB there .... come on guys .....

Cheers, Ralf.

Ralf, maybe you should just get rid of the ballast sooner. :D

Nico.
Re: WC GTG: Atlantis Dunes 13 Feb 2011 (Sunday)
Hey Nico,

Not so sure how the 'ballast' felt after I abandoned her - and then made it to the top ...

Actually I'm 100% sure it had nothing to do with her, I should have tried switching and then holding the gear much earlier ;) I wonder if 4HLC would not have been a better choice? Will play around a bit more next time ....

Swambo really enjoyed the Dunes, already asked when we were going again!

Cheers, Ralf.
