Only joking Ralf. :D

Hopefully next time I can bring my "ballast" with. ;)

I usually run around the dunes in 4LLC, but play around next time and see what works for you.

Ralf,

With each attempt, one learns something. My first attempt was too cautious (not enough momentum), second was flat-out in second gear (still not enough momentum), and I finally got up on the slope rather easily in question in third gear! I also realised (afterwards) that I did not use rear difflock. Maybe that could have made a difference.

When yours came over the crest it all seemed so easy! I am sure most of it is in the driver. The slightest caution or lifting of the right foot steals a bit of momentum, and that is the bit needed to cross the crest!

It was all great fun, and I certainly learnt a lot about my car. Mostly while in reverse gear, thinking about the prior attempt...

Hi Ralf,

I do certainly agree a Petrol is not a 'better' vehicle, just from certain points, easier to handle in sand from the get go,
I'm sure once you've really got the hang of the diesel, you will be able to get up the dunes as effortlessly as the rest.

Once again, its purely momentum and revs that play the bigger role, with a straight up dune like the last one, even experience is not essential as long as you can get the other 2 aspects right, along with the all important 'line' and sticking to your line.

Regarding What Anton said, there are quite a few variables at play with the different vehicles, as you know we had the discussion while waiting for everyone to get to the top, the general consensus was, for Manuals, 3rd worked better, for Autos, 2nd worked better, and if you had the choice, Auto 2nd worked better than manual 3rd.

Regarding HLC vs LLC, its definitely worth trying out, I think its a bit more of one, less of the other, and vica versa,
i.e. LLC = less momentum, but more high revs vs HLC = More Momentum, but less high revs. I personally think in HLC
you will be able to achieve good momentum, but will not be able to hold it all the way through, as even in LLC, some of us petrols started losing a bit of revs toward the top.

Diesel engines are not really meant to be run at top revs, where petrols are a little more lenient in that aspect, and the longer the dune face, the more likely you need to maintain as high revs for as long as possible (both diesel & petrol)

To answer your initial question simply but with bigger scope.
Atlantis Dunes - Diesel should be no problem at all, keeping the above comments everyone has mentioned in account.
Namibia Dunes - is a whole other beast, the longer the dune face, the longer momentum needs to be kept, the longer you need to try maintain top end revs.

Hi Anton

Ditto with the 2nd & 3rd gear experience........only realized on the last (& highest dune), that the Padj went up, seemingly without hassle, when in 3rd gear.....not 2nd, as I had been using for all dunes prior....

I "HAD" to do all dune climbing without rear diff-lock, as the diff-lock vacuum pipe pulled out, after the suspension lift (and fitting w/shop did not realize the necessity to lengthen + the rear diff breather as well !!)......

BUT......the Padj is such a fantastic vehicle that, with a little changing of driving skill / tactics.......seemed to overcome almost all & any obstacles that Atlantis dunes could throw........and mechanical hiccups
