Great news! Think you should organise an overlanding trip to celebrate :)

Just an update. It has now done 2800kms since rebuilt. I am not completely happy at this stage. The engine seem more noisy/rattly than what I would like. It also puffs white smoke on start up and acceleration. On the recent Tie in the Dots owners event I also experienced a temp gauge that gradually climb when doing a long uphill at speed. Crawling on the mountain it never got hot though which to me indicates that the viscose fan is not at fault. I will take it back to Alan Black soon as it definately does not feel and sound like a 'new' engine.

sounds to me like the timing is out. I can send you the manual on how to set the timing which you can pass on to AB or a competent Diesel shop.

Feedback

Rattly sound was traced to broken timing chain tensioner which makes sense but is a bit worrying but OK and replaced.

More worrying is the fact that it is loosing water due to pressure introduced which means stuffed head gasket(best scenario) or crack in cylinder head!!

When will this nightmare be over? With the pump rebuild, injectors replaced, pistons replaced, radiator replaced, oil pump replaced, water pump replaced, turbo serviced etc I have spent R77000 so far. Add the cost of the flatbed (Upington to Pta)that I had to use once, I am standing at close to R90 000! The car is maybe worth R90000! Yet it is still not reliable! When the pistons was done 5000kms ago the head was apparently tested and found to be good. Now what?

I should have sold it and bought a newer model when the first trouble started!

They are taking off the head and sending it in for tests.

The joys of driving old cars and getting somehow emotionally attached to the piece of metal :?

This was not a good 20000kms of ownership thus far. It can only get better from here on right?

PS - My outlook on the 4m41 engine reliability over 300000kms have diminished to round about NIL
