Rattly sound was traced to broken timing chain tensioner which makes sense but is a bit worrying but OK and replaced.

More worrying is the fact that it is loosing water due to pressure introduced which means stuffed head gasket(best scenario) or crack in cylinder head!!

When will this nightmare be over? With the pump rebuild, injectors replaced, pistons replaced, radiator replaced, oil pump replaced, water pump replaced, turbo serviced etc I have spent R77000 so far. Add the cost of the flatbed (Upington to Pta)that I had to use once, I am standing at close to R90 000! The car is maybe worth R90000! Yet it is still not reliable! When the pistons was done 5000kms ago the head was apparently tested and found to be good. Now what?

I should have sold it and bought a newer model when the first trouble started!

They are taking off the head and sending it in for tests.

The joys of driving old cars and getting somehow emotionally attached to the piece of metal :?

This was not a good 20000kms of ownership thus far. It can only get better from here on right?

PS - My outlook on the 4m41 engine reliability over 300000kms have diminished to round about NIL
Aai Cats, not lekker pouring money into a seemingly never ending pit... Surely there is a bit of a guarantee on the workmanship/materials from GO-power/allan black? I hope it is only the head gasket that has blown.

To be honest Alan Black/Go Power has been very accommodating although some words have flown between us a bit as tensions rise. It is as frustrating to them as it is to me I am sure. Only problem is that I am out of my car and feel very much unsure of when it will again be a reliable mode of transport.

Cats... I have also found some bonding emotion with the old Snoopster, so I can imagine your emotional investment.

Many "old timers" will say that when an old car starts costing you money, it's time to sell and move on. Sad and cruel as that may sound.

Your dilema is your honour; I don't think you will sell her untill you are sure she is 100% again.

If you sell Snoopy, you will effectively be giving her away for free. Not the most pleasant thought and not something you would have considered 20k km ago.

The Pajero has finally failed you, the trust is broken. Leave your heart at home and make the right decision.

You know me too well  and I hear the wise words spoken.

The question is of course - What is the "right" decision? My current thoughts are fix finally and keep till the true new Pajero surface, maybe 2016?, and then go big again. At least that way I get to enjoy some of the fruits of my quest to get Snoopy back to new again. But I first need to get to that point where it is in fact usable again. :? In any case, as finances stand currently and my investment thus far, there is no way where I can sell and replace immediately, plus my recently acquired BMW after Snoopy was declared fit for another few years(had I known then  ), is gonna look silly towing my off road caravan through the Kalahari  . I am not keen on a total lifestyle change to do tar road trips and stay in hotels either. So fixed it will be fixed. Snoopy is a dog after all - Mans best friend and all that - I was given a bite lately, maybe she is getting old and sometimes forgetting who is friend and who is foe, but she is still not ready to be put down, or so I hope and pray.

After this whole episode I can probably also wear the badge of old-timer proudly and talk with knowledge gained through hard earned, and paid, school fees. ;)

Sad to hear of your bad luck. I can relate.

That's the trouble these days. Good engine rebuilders are hard to find. Almost every engine rebuild I read of has an issue or two afterwards, hence why I opted for a good second hand engine in the beetle.

I hope the issue is minimal, and that it gets sorted properly now. It takes a lot to break trust in a pajero and I hope that hasn't fully happened to you.

I hear you Cats. My engine rebuild has gone pretty much the same way with 3 months down time for every month running! But o boy, when she runs! :)

;) 8-) Just wish I can get to that "run" stage again.
This year I have basically used it last Dec, when the dieselpump broke(2 months down), fixed that and went away in Apr when the pistons crapped(3 months down), fixed that and got it back end July, drove 3000km uncomfortable kms, where I had that nagging feeling that she was not well, you know - funny ping, uneven idle every now and again etc, and now the head is cracked(So far 2 weeks down and counting).

For a guy that is used to go camping at least once a month I am going slightly mad :geek:

Hopefully when this is now done she will again run like a dream. Or at least like a 50 year old former athlete on steroids.

Hi cats, have they confirmed that it is in fact the head that is cracked?
