Did he just check the diff oil or replace? The water stuff sits at the bottom, so you need open the drain plug to check that, not just check the level and consistency at the filler plug. You'll only really know if this was the problem if you change the oil, I found that checking doesn't reveal much (and if you check at the drain plug, you might as well replace).
Mitsu supposedly checked for me too. They still quoted me R20k to strip and check and in the end R100 worth of oil seemed to fix the problem.
Anyway, just a suggestion.
