CATS
Yo CATS!

Thanks man! So my plan is to basically take the nut out, remove the hub from the shaft to clean the splines, and then copper-slip the nut and reassemble. Hopefully I can do this with my neighbors help too! (these old guys hey!! GREAT!).

Anyway, if that doesn't work I'll still be looking for some spare parts from a scrappy! So if you know anyone who's banged up their Gen4 LWB and I can maybe make an offer for the rear set of shafts and hubs, let me know ;)

But I'm not paying Freek and Freek R10k for that job. Jnr clearly didn't want to do it.

Cheers, mate!

RedCat wrote: So, i mentioned to Freek jnr about the 'fix' of stripping, copperslip on the splines, swapping the left shafts to the right etc. He basically indicated that would be a waste of time and I should rather then just take about R40,000 and give it to them so they can buy all new components from the hub to the diff on both sides and then I know its a fully new set-up. He effectively indicated that would be the only solution he would consider being involved in. If I'm honest, I felt a bit annoyed by that response but perhaps he's right.

I then pressed him to verbally indicate what he'd charge me if I really really really wanted to pay him to just try the solution of disassembling, cleaning, copper-slip, swapping over and putting back together. He said it would be about a full day at least, and he'd zap me R10k labour.
Wow... Great customer service

I finally had some time to tinker with this problem. I pulled out both rear driveshafts, stripped and washed the CVs. I found 4 balls damaged, 2 on the left inner and 2 on the right inner CV.

For interest sake I phoned NMI and they Quoted me 13K for an inner CV and 13K for an outher CV and 12K for a complete shaft with the CVs... not a typo, it is more expensive to buy just a CV than a complete shaft with 2 CVs on it. So I measured a ball and went to BMG. R55 a ball and for R220 no more clicking noise! The size of the inner CV balls are one and a quarter inch (31,75mm)

Hi Spikv

That's what I need to sort out on my van as well do you still have size of the outer ball or maybe still have paper work from BMG.
You have just saved me ( hopefully) 12K

Regards
Erik

I can not recall the size of the outer balls. I only got balls for the inner CVs and not the outers so I didn't pay much attention to them.I would suggest stripping the CV and taking a sample of the balls to BMG. If you come right please post the size of those balls for future reference
