Not sure if I went through messages too quickly. I assume tyre pressures were also decreased. Did ride quality persist? At what (safe) pressure level does it start making a difference if at all?

It would depend on the load you are carrying but if at a reasonable load I would say you can go down to 1.0bar considering your speed is maximum 40km/h, if driving at a higher speed or having a heavier load then adjust up accordingly. You need to consider the tyre damage under these circumstances.

Anyone tried Tough Dog? Reason for asking: http://www.euro4x4parts.com/images/4wd_ ... gh_dog.pdf. Seems there are some gains to be made with different shocks/coils even with the monocoque chassis.

Hoping something can be done after rattling loose my fillings taking my 2008 LWB GLX through the Cederberg and Tankwa this past weekend.

Tough Dog are the choice of Mitsubishi SA for their “Legend” and “Legend II” models, so I assume they are pretty good.

Ride quality on the Pajero

Kurt,
The quest is to get an acceptable quality ride over corrugated roads.
I would love to see a manufacturers tick sheet for their requirements for a shock absorber.
I am baffled why companies develop (and mark$t) expensive suspension systems if they cannot lay claims to improvements.
And I am a sceptic of road and trial tests if it reports on how it felt for the drivers. I regard it as entertainment only. It falls in the same category as the Toyota Fortuner much publicised Moose test (which we could see as a video).
Video equipment is freely available if these people are serious about what they do.
There is equipment available to measure frequencies and a whole industry was built around it to prevent failures. So it is possible to measure how vehicles perform over corrugations.
It is interesting to hear about cracked suspension components and worn bushes as I am sure it is directly related to extreme vibrations.

My Pajero 3.8 GLS 2009 model has 120 000km on the clock, the condition of my tyres are 90% and I had my shocks tested recently and was given an OK by 2 centres that that did the tests. We live on a farm where the condition of the gravel road varies from time to time, if the road was recently graded the Pajero handles it ok but as the gravel surface start wearing it is not a pleasure to travel with the Pajero, instead we use the Isuzu bakkies or previously my wife's Fortuner that is now sold. This gravel road is 5km in length so it means 10km both ways.

A friend of mine has a 2006 model which he said handles a gravel road just fine, that is until I travelled with him on the same gravel road then I realised people has different opinions of a car rattling! It was worse than mine.

My wife has much better hearing than I have and to travel in the Pajero with her is something I like to avoid because she doesn't stop finding different rattles which makes life very annoying at that moment.

I have tried playing around with tyre pressures but to no avail, as soon as the gravel becomes corrugated it feels like the Pajero is falling apart. I will be doing more homework on this issue after reading all the replies to this post. Even with this shortcoming of this vehicle I would really like to sort out this issue.

Thanks to this forum and KurtG, I am now loving my Pajero (2008 LWB DiD).

I had a really irritating rattle on the left side that I couldn't find ... and neither could Mitsubishi Cresta. They charged me an assessment fee of R718.20 only to tell me it needed new shocks and helicoils to secure the front bashplate - neither of which were the cause of the rattle.

Seeing the posts about the dash issue I was led to Kurt who I went to see last Saturday morning. What a nice helpful guy! In less than 2 hours he had sorted out all the known issues on the dash, resolved my noisy steering wheel action (steering shaft universal joint boot), tapped new threads and secured my bash plate, and found the cause of the irritating rattle - another bash plate further back under the vehicle - which he also secured.
Oh, and we discovered the vehicle has a Unichip in it, which I was not aware of. A more worthwhile visit I could not have had.

Thank you so much Kurt - my Pajero is now so quiet it's almost eerie and I am enjoying it far more now than at any time in the 2,5 years I've owned it. Your service and helpfulness was amazing.

People must love this car immensely because feedback of this very annoying rattle issue on badly corrugated roads doesn't get too much attention or the car is so good that they choose to live with it.

I also own one and must say it has a very high quality ride and handling, not inferior to any other similar SUV/4x4 out there untill you hit the corrugations. On the positive side, the handling on bad roadsurfaces at speed are positive, surefooted and the car is extremely stable.

I'm waiting for responses from people who installed the progressive coils and suspension from Arnold Venter as I also spent so much money and time on trying to fix this, but now I am on the verge of getting rid of my Pajero as the joy of driving this machine is waning.

Looking forward to next Sunday evening.

Awie

Will someone be so kind to send me Kurt's contact details? He sounds like the go to guy to sort out annoying audible problems inside the car, a good place to start.
