One question: Can one realy recondition CV joints? My impression is that the actual rolling surfaces are case hardened and when they machine the marks "out", they must go through the case hardening. The reconditioned CVs might be OK for a few kilos, but then they will start to wear at quite an fast rate. Your comments please.

I have not considered re-conditioning CVs in the past, and I'm unlikely to consider it in future.
I agree with your post, and cannot see how the ball-cage tolerances can be maintained if the balls are machined.

(Unless of course they don't machine anything, but replace worn items with new / good ones.

From a post on the 4x4community, GSP apparently is the best aftermarket CVs available in SA...not as good as the OEM.

I'm planning on visiting Jurgen (Mega Cage) and will keep this post updated.

I had a torn CV boot rubber and believe this is where the problems started....if it is the CVs.

Once I have the info regarding, new vs recon, makes and models, I'll post some updates. Lets just hope that I can get some time off work next week to go and see Jurgen.

Ok...so this morning, I took the pajero to Mega Cage in Silverton. We did a few tests in the parking lot.....here is the outcome:

The stupid front mudguard, fender thingy catches the wheel...yip, go ahead, say it: CATS and others told me so...I did have a look at it , but it seemed to clear the mudguard by about 2cm...so it can't be that......just show....check things more than once to confirm suspicions.

But, the pajero is at mega cage, I did arrange a lift and everything, so I decided to have Jurgen take a look at the CVs, open them up, clean and re-grease them and give feedback on the condition of the CVs. I did have a broken CV boot a while ago, so get it serviced and then I know it's done.

I will give feedback on service and quality when I collect the pajero this afternoon.

OK I'll be the first to say :"I told you so!" :-)

Glad it wasn't as serious as you thought.
