Thanks very much DandB,

Nice installation!

I am using pretty much all I have stripped out of the Pajero Sport I had, as it was a trade in. I was going to fit both 102Ah batteries but this would necessitate moving the diesel filter housing, and I would also sit with a brand new 70Ah battery and nothing to use it on.

So moving the original to the new position was my best option, coupled to the National Luna charger. This obviously has the benefit of charging the car battery first and then charging the Aux battery. All under bonnet work is done now.

I am awaiting the fitment of the towbar today to chose a position for the Brad Harrison plug at the back. Then the upside down work starts on the cabling. I will be going underbody as I do not fancy messing with the roof air bag installation in the pillars. Enough fastening positions available on the underbody to use P cable clamps, about 10 points identified.

Will let know if further problems,

Cheers,

Henri

Anyone else got any words of wisdom for this dual battery set up, going to be attempting mine In the next 2 weeks... I am thinking of using individual 6mm wire for positive and negative from the second battery to the rear boot area, will this be thick enough to handle the load of a single fridge/freezer combo in the back?

Also how long will a 652 size battery run a freezer continuously for without being charged? Its a Waeco cfx for interest sake...

Hi,

My family and I went camping in the Cedar-berg during this past school holidays. I had all the wiring for a dual battery system when I purchased my vehicle about a year and a half ago and in June we did a trip up to Sani Pass and I had a second car battery and slotted it as a second battery for that trip. On the way back to Cape Town, in East London I noticed my alternator light beginning to glow ever so slowly and luckily we have family there and pulled in to have that sorted. Turns out the brushes of the alternator was the culprit. Bought another alternator in East London and problem solved but not before completely disconnecting the second battery thinking that it was the cause of the alternator brushes wearing out all of a sudden.

So since then I was hesitate on getting this dual battery system installed permanently. Chatted to a couple of well informed overland guys and seems as if it was just the alternators time for replacement brushes and having a second battery had nothing to to with it. So before our trip to the Cedar-berg, bought a 105Ahr Deep cycle battery and went camping at Mount Cedar, which has no electricity only solar power. There I noticed that they use deep cycle batteries to run the LED lights in the kitchen and ablution areas with a solar charge controller connected to a solar panel on the roof and that got me thinking about adding a solar panel to my dual battery installation so during the day while camping, the solar panel would charge the aux battery instead of the alternator. Bought an 80w solar panel, mounted it to the roof-rack and a solar charge controller mounted in the rear of the Pajero connected to a relay which disconnects the panel once the alternator kicks in when the vehicle starts. So far its working great......
