My 'Sport now has 160 000km of interesting mileage on her.
After years of dealing with a jet aircraft landing roar which turned heads and frightened newspaper vendors at the traffic lights, I was forced to address it when a rather expensive sound was rattling at the front of the 3.2 Di - D motor.
The viscous was ALWAYS on, even if it was 17 degrees outside and not driving hard. FLIPPEN noisy.
Guessed the new noise was v- belts, as it calmed down as motor warmed up.
Decided to pull radiator and clean a few years of trees out.


Did belts, never been changed.
Checked pulleys for play ..found that the main crank pulley was a bit off centre. But looked ok.
Sorted a few rattles from the air box.
Had radiator cleaned at Silverton PE and tested thermostat to see if this was the culprit for running viscous all the time.
My test showed it opens at 87 deg instead of stamped 75 deg
Silverton confirmed the high opening temp...
This was at no charge, thanks guys.
Dealers reported no stock of thermostat in the country......... Found one at Auto Zone, more expensive than the out of stock original!( thanks Imperial)

Fresh antifreeze.

After starting, noticed noise was still there, but now there was a metal to metal sound. Saw the main pulley was running really bad now.
Stripped all out again and found that the front pulley had separated. It's a two part assembly, presumably for vibration damping.
Panic sets in. Call to the dealers reveals one IN STOCK , in PE !! R2200

After a call to Marius 4e Pikanini (?) on the bolt removal trick ( Thanks boet), new pulley fitted, reassembled all.

All quiet now, including only occasional running of the fan which quiet end down in seconds.
So motor has been running 10 deg hotter for more than 2 years!
Plus I'm sure there was a fuel consumption penalty for running that fan all the time..

Only issue now is that I can hear the motor clearly now, and a few other rattles!

This post seems dead, so hoping to get some discussion going....
Have fitted Yokahama MT's, Front Runner roof rack, NU Portable Battery pack for Snowmaster fridge, Escape Gear seat covers and only waiting for the Stoffpad rocksliders and bash plate!

Fitted a ....uh.....k&n flat panel filter to the my 2.5 paj sport yesterday Yes yes, they provide only marginal filtration in dusty conditions, but this is for use on highways only, and only because I'm so desperate to get a small improvement in the turbo lag. It does help a tad, btw

Performed scheduled engine (Delo 400) oil and filter (Mitsu OEM) change at 247195 (schedule is 247500) and topped up radiator expansion bottle with coolant.

Got a verbal quote from Silverton for an intercooler service (straighten out a bit and internal / external clean) - under R500 excl VAT if I take it off and refit it. So I plan to do that in the next month or so. Probably makes sense to talk to Stofpad first.

Replaced my 80Ah AGM secondary battery with a 120Ah Lead crystal. It's fitted in the rear where the 3rd row of seats used to be.

The 80Ah AGM now powers my alarm in the house

I gave the old girl a good polish and wax over the last few weeks and finaly finished it off. It came out great. I even blogged about it. A new thing I am giving a go

As per my reply posted under the "Chassis, bodywork, trim and interior" section, I had my 2003 Did SWB fully wrapped with Matte Green and Black Vinyl.

Was a bit of a mission as the roofrack, awning, nudgebar, spots, snorkel, sparewheel with bracket etc. all had to be removed (and put back ). But it was absolutely worth it!

The wrapping itself took only 3 days.

Was done by Fineline Designs and Wrap Vehicles in Jhb Honeydew. Their details are mentioned under the other post.

Will try to post some better quality pics soon.

Hello all ... New member , first post. Today I took my lwb on its very first off road experience. Attended the Protea 4x4 course at the Rhino and Lion park. Wow, what a day and what a vehicle! Was asked to not engage the dif lock at times because of the "unfair advantage" it gives over the "normal 4x4 's . I felt like a pro even though it was my first off road experience. A very , very capable vehicle. Sticks to the road like it's part of it . Can’t wait for more : the 4x4xfar

Pajero got a service yesterday. New oilband filter, new air filter, new front brakes, leak fixed at the power steering pump.

Today.......I finally had the guts to remove the dastek chip. Took it for a spin around a few blocks....all seems ok. Will se how she runs on the open road. Curious about fuel consumption. Travelling to Bloemfontein tomorrow, would like to see if I can get 10km/l.

I had some time to work on the viscous coupling on the fan, i have been suspecting that it had been under performing for a while now as my over heating issues have been getting progressively worse after fitting my aftermarket burnco bumper a year ago.

I searched for the viscous fluid everywhere, and only managed to find some 10000cst silicone oil from toyota. Midas, autozone and other spares shops have no idea what I was talking about. I bought two tubes of 18ml for R158.00 each.

I removed the fan and viscous coupling from the pulley and gave them both a good clean with prepsol. I then carefully opened the hub and emptied the two tubes inside. There was very little silicone inside once opened.
I put it all back together and and back in the Pajero.

It seems alot stiffer when turned by hand now but will only be able to test properly once my brakes are working again.

If this does not resolve the overheating problem I will have to have my radiator rodded by silverton.
