@Nick, I think you will see a big difference. I did something similar a month or two ago. Prior to that I had ended up fitting a new 3-core radiator, replacing all the seals between the AC condenser and radiator, replacing the water pump, belts, thermostat etc. I was happy to do those things at 200000km plus as preventative measures, but I still had heat issues on long climbs.

After refilling the viscous coupling and having just done a 2500km trip to Northern Kruger and Mapungubwe, it looks like the viscous sorted the problem out.
Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
Had a chance this afternoon to pull the Pajero's starter motor due to an intermittent non start fault, just a click.

Thought I could get the the solenoid contacts cleaned up, but found it to be a sealed unit, will have to order a new one. Here are some before and after pictures of it being cleaned.

Starter pulled, very muddy and grimy.

All taken apart and ready to be cleaned, inside the case was quite oily and the reduction planetary gears needed a clean and re-grease. The bendix shaft was all gunked up and wasn't moving freely when moved by hand, I can only imagine how the solenoid struggled.

All cleaned up with prepsol, only the armature and brushes done with Spanjaard 'elektrokleen'. I also tried to spray some into the solenoid to try and clean the contacts as it is sealed, but no luck.

Word of warning, the shaft has an overrun clutch on it on it should not be immersed in detergent (I found out too late, should have read the FSM first....), as it is prepacked with lubricant in the factory. I hope mine lasts as I had it in a tub of prepsol for 5 mins, but so far so good.

All done and ready to reinstall.

The Paj still has intermittent click and no start but on a few more try's it took and definitely sounds sweeter(like a new car), snd swings alot quicker too, it was getting a bit lazy starting the motor before. Will order a new soleniod tomorrow.

Arranged for Dusty to have a wash.

I filled up the diesel tanks and treated Dusty to 2 bottles of Mitsubishi Red Bull for diesels (Diesel Fuel System Cleaner part # MZ100722EX 250ml per bottle). Definitely makes it the most expensive fill up ever at approx R132 a bottle! But assuredly cheaper than a rebuild.
Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
Today I completed the changes to my extra fuel tank. The biggest change was to remove the filler and dipstick pipes from the "boot" (tank is in the third row seats position) and connecting the extra filler pipe to the main filler pipe. IOW both tanks filed from the standard refuelling position. I have also incorporated a valve so that I can prevent the filling of the extra tank.

I also incorporated a fuel gauge and pump switch that have their own switches - iow I can switch the gauge on when needed. Ditto for the pump. Power is drawn from the dual battery system.

The gauge and both switches are in the top halve of the left "D" pillar and everything works like intended.

I have also done a complete gearbox oil and filter change as per 4E's instructions. The Pajero is now ready for it's next trip to Bots and Namibia.

This sounds interesting.
Any chance of some pictures?

Andrew,
As I have said before, both my daughter and I have tried to get pictures on this site but we failed. We could not sort out how or where we have gone wrong. Maybe one of the "slim ouens" would like to come and enjoy a cold one and sort out my @#&^% computer.

Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
I have bought a Pajero that were still imported back in the day for about R70000 because we use it only when we go on safari I decided to do the annual maintenance myself and remember I am a office boy never did anything more mechanical than change a oil filter. Here is two lessons I learned.

1. the nice oompie you bought your car from does not always know the state of the engine, gearbox, diff or anything else really is or he is not telling you.

2. If you can learn to service your car it is amazing how much peace of mind you have before a long trip when you've checked everything.

I changed the Clutch kit myself and found a leaking seal that were messing oil on the clutch plate, I had everything skimmed and relined. I learned to change the universal joints on the prop shafts because they look like they were dry for a very long time, I have to still clean out and refill the diff.

The one thing I thought I couldn't do was change the bearings or seals on the gearbox but after a R12000 quote to refurb it I am going to do that myself. And to be honest I cant wait.
