Hi All
I've had my car back for a bit now and I'm very happy with the result. It took a little bit longer for them to do the work as they felt a bit of an imbalance on the replacement flywheel and sent it back for re-balancing. Happy for them to take more time and do a proper job.
Amazingly, the clutch coming out with 224k+ km on the clock and never changed before looked fine. Plenty of friction material left and all the grooves still visible. There were some spots on the pressure plate though and the dual-mass flywheel felt as though it had unnecessary play which probably accounted for the shudder. But the clutch, still in perfect shape.
Anyway, the new kit is in, clutch feels soft and smooth and very little difference to a new dual mass combo as installed by the dealer (another Pajero in the family serves as reference). Only possible vibration I can feel is when you're in 3rd gear + and gear down with RPM's dropping to to below 1600rpm'ish, then it feels like there's a bit of a vibration (carried from the engine) until you get closer to 2000rpm. The DMF may have absorbed some of that before but I'm okay with that as I feel it's actually a wrong shift and I should change down when the revs are a bit higher.
As for the 2.8 flywheel in a 3.2 debate, I believe that's been concluded. Yes, you can fit a 2.8 flywheel on a 3.2 if you want, but the 3.2 flywheel is substantially thicker than the 2.8 and the Gen3 bell-housing is built for the thicker flywheel. Putting in a 2.8 flywheel will require modifications to the thrust bearing arrangement.
Thumbs up my side for Mitspro. Would have been nice if that milled flywheel was a bit cheaper, but of the R13.8k for the job, only a fraction of that was their labour cost.
