Before the turbo on the manifold towards the EGR pipe. Might be slightly understated but still the norm of what I got over the last 150000kms or so since installed.
I think it is pretty accurate? Between 200degC and 450degC when worked and around 450-600degC when towing uphill. I set it at 700degC max to raise alarm which it never ever got to.

Humm? It is getting to be more than a coincidence. The White Bus blew a head gasket and this was quickly followed by a holed piston. An Alan Black pump service was done (over fuelling blamed as the cause of the holed piston) followed by another piston failure. New injectors required and the whole kit (pump and injectors) tested by AB. Still not happy with the results and cost involved was astronomical. So much so my standard recommendation has been “Lexus conversion!” every time I hear a head gasket or diesel pump has gone.
So Cats, how about a Lexus conversion?

Lock. I hear you. Cant all be coincidence. I have heard too many stories of pump done and then pistons needs replacement. Very fishy.Lock wrote:Humm? It is getting to be more than a coincidence. Tell me. When you replaced the pistons the first time, was all four done or only the one that had a hole? If only one, was that not maybe the reason for the second failure? I ask because I have heard a few cases where only the stuffed piston was done and problem returned on another one.
If I redo the motor I will definitely have the injectors and pump rechecked. Problem with injector is that one bit of water or dirty diesel can kill it in a few kms and then it is stuffed. So how does one proof that it might have been stuffed when fitted oruginally?
Maybe Mitsu just designed piston and pump to have the exact same lifespan

Lexus motor? I am not so sure it will work out much cheaper in the end with all the adaptors, electronics and what not and then you sit with a bastard child. If I had a swb toy to ply around on the dunes I might have given it some thought. But on overland touring vehicle I am not inspired by the Lexus motor.
Do you still have the White Bus? Is it at least reliable again and was the rebuild a success eventually? Who did the work for you?

1. Overheated head resulting in
2. Coolant in cylinder(s) resulting in
3. Reduced cylinder wall lube resulting in
4. Ring / cylinder / cylinder wall failure resulting in
5. Sump oil accumulating in combustion chamber resulting in
6. Hot spots of glowing carbon in chamber resulting in
7. Holed pistons?
This whole holes in pistons of diesel engines (and it is by no means limited to Mitsu) is scaring the heck out of me.
One site I read earlier today (Engine blow up GU Nissan Patrol Diesel) suggested that as inlet system gunks up, (and we know that happens on our ageing Pajeros), boost increases and with that fuel load increases. The only problem is that the increased boost does not result in more air because inlet is restricted by gunk. The consequence is overfuelling and burning pistons. My knowledge does not allow me to deduce whether this is a rational mechanism.
We have to get to the bottom of this.
I am planning to open the engine up and get a verdict on results and possible causes.andrew.ashton wrote:This whole holes in pistons of diesel engines (and it is by no means limited to Mitsu) is scaring the heck out of me.Lock wrote:Humm? It is getting to be more than a coincidence.

Just the one piston was replaced. When the second one failed,it was blamed on a "bad" injector and all the injectors and pistons replaced with new. Still have her, but lost any confidence in her, so no long trips into the bush!

After waiting 2 weeks for Freek at Mitspro to come and collect vehicle I have taken the plunge and decided to send it to Go-Power at Alan Black. At least they also recently did the pump so no finger pointing can happen. Snoopy was picked up Friday for another flat bed ride, at least this time with a Mitsu Fuso powered truck

I will keep you guys updated on the outcome.

Yo Cats, not nice to see such a grand old lady on a stretcher. You know I'm truthfull when I say: I feel your pain. I hope you get it all sorted out and not end up bankrupt to boot.
