To keep, fix or trash??
Hi guys

I am quite new to this "Pajero-thing" and need some advice. 1996 3.5 V6 GLS LWB Manual. Current mileage is 214 000. The question is: Am I in for some shocking repair bills soon? Background on vechile:

It had a fairly easy life until I bought it at 180k. Doing some easy grade 3's - nothing serious. 2 things worry me:

The clutch pedal feels hard and sometimes hesitate to release about 2 cm from the top - this however does not effect the take-up is any way. Also no shudders or slipping.

From an egine point of view: It uses about 1 litre of oil per 3 000km. Not to serious. However, if I now plan to invest in the "Glory Lorry" in the form of dual battery, new leather, drawers, OME, etc. I do not want to be stuck with a bank breaking engine overhaul bill some time soon.
I heard some stories about the top that will need work soon @ R20k+.

I will appreciate your experience and advice on this!

Welcome here Victor

The name of your vehicle should say it all, glory lorry, mine is called kaspir for the same reason, strong reliable and a great drive. Worst case scenario if you pop a motor for some reason is a jap replacement for about 18k and you are back in business, cosmetics is a different story but that is why you look after your baby. A clutch kit is not that expensive but it is a devil to install, we are not dealing with a 1400 bakkie and the components are big and a bother to manhandle. with a bit of ingenuity and a decent engine crane it can be done by any one that is a bit handy and has time to do it one step at a time, no surprises.

These pajeros are not known to have major problems and the only major repair on mine was an engine that I popped due to my own stupidity and arrogance. Kaspir is on 355 000 km now and has had the suspension done because I like the old man emu comfort and handling, other than that I have done no major repairs on her just regular services.

I had a similar oil use but since I changed to high quality stuff it has come down as have the fuel consumption and lifter rattle. Remember to change your gearbox and diff oils as well as these are just as important as your engine lube and they will give you many ks of trouble free service.

200000km?? It's barely run in!

Mine is the same as yours and about the same mileage.

You have nothing to worry about on the motor side - just make sure the camebelt was changed at 200000km. Thats a bit of an expensive job, but not as expensive as a broken cambelt.

The clutch pedal is not right. The clutch on the pajero is one of the lightest of any vehicle I have driven. so perhaps have that seen to. I doubt it's the clutch itself though.

SimonB I hope you have contacts for us. Mine on my 1999 3.5V6 cost me 7 big ones from the stealers and I have an invoice to proof it. Cambelt and plugs about the same from stealers. Maybe the price is right but I am not an expert.
Hope now next 80,000ks trouble free.

Unless you are in a real crisis, why go backwards?
