Its a very difficult thing to describe but at very slow speeds or when pulling off from a dead stop I get this subtle clunk / knock which is more felt than heard.
I hazard to say an engine mounting or perhaps a driveshaft.
Any ideas or thoughts?
Hi,
Not sure if this is the same problem as you are having... I noticed a knock sound soon after I bought my SWB Pajero... It didn't always happen, just sometimes on pull-away and stopping... (actually mainly on pull away after a complete stop)
It turns out it only occurs when the fuel tank is full (or above 3/4)! It is the fuel "sloshing" in the tank

My 3.2DID Auto LWB also makes a knocking sound coming from under the car, around the middle somewhere. This happens when I pull away and when I stop, either forward or backwards. Have no idea what it might be.
I'm reading two different knocks here. One on the LWB is when the tank is full. The fuel splashes around and thats the one knock I think macjohnw is descibing.
The other, if its the same as mine, is the front torsion bars dry. they go through a rubber bush and thats needs lubricating.

Ironically I have a full tank whilst im feeling this at the moment.
A torsion bar that is dry sounds more like it - its a very mechanical grating feel. However reading Gregs post on the other forum, hmm maybe this is it. I guess i'll do a wait and see until the tank is much lower.
Thanks for the input.

Joining the discussion late ... some thoughts on other clunk-sources:
- Worn propshaft joints
- Tranfser case backlash (not sure if this is applicable to newer Pajeros, but my Gen 1 certainly had some)
- Exhaust touching somewhere (might be symtom of broken engine or gearbox mount)
- Loose towbar (unlikely but easy enough to check)
But I also know the dry torsion bar clunk from my Colt - mine actually sounded more like something breaking and scared the sh!t out of me the first time

Just a reminder that the Gen3 Pajero does not have a torsion bar suspension. So eliminate that one from your shortlist of culprits for the noise.
I don't think it is the fuel tank - the sound I am hearing is a clear metal kind of sound. I will have to pull it over a pit and have somebody drive it forwards and backwards will standing underneath.KaiV wrote:I'm reading two different knocks here. One on the LWB is when the tank is full. Hi everyone,
I am driving 3.2 did lwb 2000 model. Also had a "clunk" sound on pull away and stop. Had to recon the diff on 200 000km. Wining was gone (replaced the crown wheel & pininion), but "clunk" sound still very clear. I then replaced the alliminium "arm" that attach the diff to the chassis. There are two rubber "mountings" at the end of this alliminium arm, that gets warn out with age, and can not absorb the "movement "of the diff when pulling away or changing gears (from 1st to 2nd). I replaced this "arm" and the two rubben mountings on the "chassis". Please give me a call - 0823036305, as it is easier to explain over the phone!
