hi, i have a problem with 2000 pajero 3.5 petrol, she has an intermittent jerk when accelerating, (feels almost like when a car has run out of petrol...and then starts accelerating again?) this really only happens from around 2nd gear through 4th. i discovered this only after i purchased the car 3 months ago, since then have had the following done: have changed spark plugs (twice) checked coils, fuel line, intake manifold had a small hole that was repaired and replaced a vacuum hose...running out of ideas and moet!
i would greatly appreciate any advice on this one!

It might be a silly question but have you replaced the fuel filter? It is under the vehicle and a bit of a schlep to get to so it is often neglected.
The other thing that comes to mind is the fuel pressure regulator but they are not known to give drama.

I have a similar problem which occurred after my last service - 1997 3.5GLS DOHC
Funny thing is that it happens more when the vehicle is warm or have done a significant longer distance - not so much in day to day town driving.
Any advice for me as well?

The guys have covered the possible causes quite comprehensively in the posts above. In my mind the prime culprits would probably be the ignition leads and coil packs. You say you checked these; What do you mean? Did you verify that they are OK? If so, how? Or did you replace them?

fuel filter: was changed, wasnt that, the vehicle is still with the mechanic, will ask him to check this out.
i would say its more of a hesitation than a jerk, she will sort of stop accelerating for a second and then gets going again.
mine seems to react this way most of the time, not really distance/time specific.
the coils we checked by the mechanic, will ask how as well as ask if the ignition leads were checked.
it is possible that the mechanic has not paid good attention to this one as i have had an issue with him in the past. if there are any suggestions as to where to take the vehicle in the JHB west rand area, or even within JHB for that matter i would be sure to give it a bash.
last thing, i purchased the vehicle with a uni-chip in, which leads to 2 questions: 1 is it possible that this is the problem (possible bad installation?) and 2 would SAC then be the best place to take her to get it set up and a dyno as i am getting between 4.5-6 km/l at the moment regardless of how i drive!

Had the same problem last year with my 1999 3500 Blister manual.
My mechanic took me for a ride replacing TPS, a coil, an injector, plugs......BIG RRRRR's.
Told him to check leads but he knew better!!! It went away to some degree, but when it came back again (thankfully only after returning from a Botswana trip) I was referred via this forum to Alan at ANG in Cape Town. Turned out to be leads!!! Car has never run better since I got it almost six years ago, and service levels and attention to detail are unlike anything I have EVER experienced.

i have just had the same problem. I was very low on fuel and my paj satrted to jerk as if running out of petrol. Luckily it started as I was pulling into the garage. I thought that the jerking would stop after i had put in fuel, it didnt. I changed the fuel filter and my mechanic showed me all the junk that he got out of the filter. The filter was replaced and two bottles of injector cleaner was added to the fuel. The car now runs smooth as ever.
My meachanic did say that it could get worse as debri is getting flushed out. He also said that if it does not get better that the fuel tank will need to be flushed to remove all dirt and other debri. Maybe your fuel tank is dirty, maybe from filling up at dodgy petrol stations while on holiday.

What product did you use? I get conflicting advice on using additives and wonder whether additives actually works. Used WMPenn Valve Ease on my previous model (also a 3.5 Gen2), but that seemed to be a waste of money.Keenan wrote:... two bottles of injector cleaner was added to the fuel. ...

I used Wynn fuel injector cleaner, can be used on diesel and petrol. It also supposedly absorbs any water in the tank, which is good. The bottles cost just under R40 a pop, so not such a waste of money if they dont work. They seem to be doing the job fine though.
