Help may need new transfer case or drive chain

Hello all,
I drained my transfer box oil and found pieces of chain stuck to the drain plug. The strange thing is, is that the 4x4 system is still working just fine. I went to the local gear box den and was told that the cost would be R15000.00 plus to repair. They also told me that I should try source a second hand transfer box and they will fit it for R2500.00.
This is very scary for me and would like some info and support in getting this repaired. Your help will be much appreciated.
