Lifter Noise
Good Morning

I really strugle with lifter noise on my 1996 3500 V6 Pajero. Is there any additive available thet might sort this out? What about synthetic oil? I currently use Caltex Delo 400.

Hardy,

Firstly, welcome! Hope you enjoy it here!

You may want to search our previous discussions on the issue of lifters here: https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/search.php

If you have lifter noise at startup that goes away, it is normal. Ignore it and enjoy your ride! If you have continuous noise from the lifters, and it even continues if you shut down the engine and restart, it is going to need work done. There is a cleaning routine, (recorded in the forum's documentation section) but no guarantee that it will stop the noise - therefore the only real solution is replacing them. This may cost around R4- to R5 000. If you can do it yourself, you can spare on labour cost.

Fortunately you can go some time with noisy lifters, so you may want to combine it with a cambelt replacement.

As far as additives are concerned - I am yet to see one that works. Save your money. Use a good oil (I use HELIX High Mileage) and on my previous Pajero I used Castrol Magnatec - both good oils.

Anton

What I have found to work well is to add an extra 500ml of oil to the crankcase, yes use good oil, I use Edge but as far as the dello goes you will find it hard to beat, in anybodies book that would qualify as a premium oil

The cleaning routine is here:

If anyone has actually done the cleaning job, please let us know whether it worked.

Thanks,

Anton
