Dear All,

finally i am about to buy a Pajero now / have already placed some deposit and sent it to the technical exam (attached).

Seems like i have to ask for some small repairs, engine tuning, new clutch and new joints at driveshaft. Anymore ideas?

regards
Christian

Chris,

When I saw that one on Gumtree I thought you may go for it.

I would go into the Universal joint issue before buying - that may need some work. You may fail roadworthy with a cracked w/screen. But then the price is good.

I see it has more km than advertised - good thing, as it may indicate the car is being used (thus not parked for some sucker to buy).

I suggest you talk down the price to R75k and then buy a motorite plan with it.

Good luck!

Anton

The motorite plan really seems to be worthwhile! Thanks for the hint!

It worked for me with my previous Pajero. Claims equaled cost, and I had assurance of assistance with any major breakdowns for 2 years.

Fortunately never had one of those!

Motorite is probably one of the most maligned insurance policies out there, but I can speak from experience that it has been worth every cent ... The pajero being the only vehicle I have owned that it hasn't been necessary

Dear All,

The endless story continuous ;-). The Owner was not ready to go down with the price neither to repair the expensive stuff. I therefore decided to walk away.

No i am again about to buy a pajero. This time the Test was good. 1999, 220000 on the clock. All major problems the showed up will be repaired by the owner. I would be ready to pay 80000 i guess.

There are only two things that are a bit disturbing: While driving it is a bit squeaky and rattling. The other 10 (!) pajeros, that i drove did not have that sound. The interior is most probably responsible for that - and i guess there is no cure.

Furthermore the car appeared to be week in third gear - but i guess the problem was the driver not used to a pajero manual and therefore not changing gears at the right point... I will go for another testdrive to be sure . and than hopefully take the car - even it is squeaky ;-).

regards
Christian

Christian,

A squeeky interior is normally no problem. A few cable ties, tightened screws and laminated rubber strips can do wonders to cure that. You may need to get into the door panels, but that is easy. Tha same time it helps seeing whether there are other problems or potential issues (like rust, if you were at the coast).

A gearbox problem is MAJOR. Do not buy unless you are totally satisfied that it is in order. IF the gearbox's functionality changed because of previous use, it is BROKEN. It either works to spec or it is faulty.I suggest more than a test drive - have it checked out by a specialist in gearboxes.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I understand how subjective one becomes when buying. Outsiders' opinions may help to be more objective.

R80 000 is a good price, but then you don't want a hidden R20 000 in repairs...

Good luck,

Anton

Hi Anton,

thanks for the advice. I had it checked by DEKRA / autocheck. They say, everything is fine. In my second test drive i also thought it was fine. So i am actually in the process of buying now :-). I am just waiting for the results of the first repairs.

Good for you!

I hope she gives you many miles of fun and pleasure. Make sure you take her off the black stuff (tar) frequently!

Show us some pics once you have her!
