My Gabriel Kubu's are on the way out and should really be replaced in the next 15000km or so.
So was thinking of upgrading the suspension:
Quotes are as follows for 4 shocks and coils - will uprate the TB's at a later stage:
OME - 8400
XGS - 8350
Ironman - 7900
I'm inclined to go for Ironman, but I was thinking an alternative.
I can get Bilsteins for around R4000, landed cost, somehting which I'm keen on. But what do I do for coils. Obvioulsy the other solutions are that the coils are matched to the shocks, so how do I match someone elses coils to the bilstein shocks?
And In case anyone asks, I have no money to burn (referring to my FF/Wc branch question elsewhere), but I'm putting a 12 month budget together for Pumba.
Simon, how about full set of Ironman including TB's for R8K

I was only looking at getting the springs done, not the TB's. Do Springs also not get a little tired over time?
While the Bilstiens are serviceable shocks compared to the others is it a job that one can do oneself?

I am extremely biased, One of three is what I would consider, OME OME, or OME. I am well aware of bilstein performance and quality in a plat kar but totaly ignorant in the off road section. On my flat and fast they perform extremely well but Kasper has OME and it has changed the handling to that of a platkar on tar and off road. I had the pleasure of taking my mother in law to die damme near struisbaai and we had to cross over some pretty hectic terrain in the region of a grade 4. I was worried about the old lady of 76 in the back hanging on for dear life and when i looked back she was casually sending sms's from her cell no worries about the rough ride. On our Jan 09 training trip at hennops pride I could compare against other systems and the ome came out tops.

Simon,
I have the full TJM XGS suspension on my SWB. Now I know it is expensive, however, I cannot tell you what a difference it has made to the car's handling, both on and off-road.
The reason I got the full set was that I drive mostly dirt roads, and the original suspension had done 230 000km (so they were quite shot), so I replaced everything at the beginning of this year. The handling improved, the fuel consumption was better and for me I got that little extra ground clearance. Previously I got quite a lot of rolling through corners, even at a slow speed, now nothing at all! If ever I was braking hard, the nose would dive forward before, now, nothing. I am extremely happen with them, and would go back to TJM for what ever my next pajero is.
Your only concern: It can be a hard ride - for me its fine, but for others, maybe not.
Hope you find what you would like.

Hi TRay,
My SWB is getting his TJMs next week, R9k for 4 shocks and the Torsion Bars.
Will let you know how it feels. I decided not to fit rear coils, because I have the airhelpers at the back. Hope this is not a problem.

Wilfred, why are you having the torsion bars changed? I would just set the existing ones to level the front, because the air helper springs are not intended to provide lift, but rather to maintain the suspension level when laden. When empty, the air springs must be deflated or the ride will be very hard and bumpy.

Hi Wilford,
I have honestly no idea about air helpers. I got the coils fitted at the back to complete the TJM system, but also so that I could get the ground clearance that I wanted (not that I really need it). For me it was important to fit the entire system because of the type of driving a do - mostly dirt and gravel roads. When I got it all fitted, it was one fitment changing all the shocks, torsion bars and the coils, so I only know the complete change and for me that made a huge difference - especially on dirt.
As I said, I’m very happy with the fitment.
Good luck with it!

Hi Gerrit,
I am changing the front torsion bars because I feel the torsion bars are a bit soft and sagging. Hope the new ones will help. The back air helpers are deflated to 0.2 bars when I don't have a load. Still the vehicle looks higher at the back.
Let's see what happens !!
