Upgraded horn / hooter / "toeter"

Since I got my Pajero I was slightly dissapointed in the somewhat 'sissyboy' horn with which it was endowed. For a big vehicle like the Pajero one would expect a good throaty roar when you do use the horn to warn traffic etc, but alas, mine sounded somewhat 'unsure' of itself. If compared to say my 3 series BMW horn there is a night and day difference.

Since reading a similar thread on an overseas forum I decided to investigate further. The horn refered to in the article was this baby made by Stebel, an Italian company. http://www.stebel.it/stebel2009/product ... gia=pickup . From a quick search on the froum it seemed that these items are also available in SA but mostly for the bikers. MIDAS however seem to have a good similar type thing on stock. So when I went to buy my oil for the next service I had a good look. They had one that looks very similar, only red plastics where the Stebel is black, on hand for R170 and I decided to give it a go. The horn has its own little air compressor and should be a bit more asertive. :lol:

I did the instalation by removing the front grill and mounted the new horn where the one tiny one was mounted before.

I did the instalation as noted on the box routing 12v power through a relay, which was provided in the box, but in hindsight a straight plug and play with only a earth wire added from somewhere on the body should also work as the horn wire on the Pajero is already on a relay by the sounds of it.

Took me about 1.5 hours as I strugled a bit with the relay mounting, but all in all I am HUGELY impressed. I left the one original one in and the pair sounds much more satisfying. Can't wait for the next Taxi to try and cut in front of me! :)

I have on all my cars chucked out the original hooters and fitted Fiam, these are Italian horns and will knock a Putco bus over,you must fit a relay otherwise you will burn out the horn/button/wiring.I can personally recommend these as I hung on my horn button for at least 10 minutes against a taxi,drove everybody mad not to say deaf. 8-)

Careful - I understand that a dual-tune horn is illegal. Has something to do with the human ear being confused with judging distance, as some tunes are heared better from a distance than others.

Maybe Ghost can confirm this?

To my knowledge "multi-tone" would refer to those hooters that play a tune eg. la cuca racha, etc.

Two single tone hooters that go off simultaneously should be fine, if not encouraged. ;)

Nico.

P.S. I will be replacing my sissy hooter soon. :lol:

Guys, I've been wanting to post something like this for a time now. Do you guys know where I can buy a hooter that has the same tone as the old cars? My uncle got one that sounds like a model "T" ford and its amazing. Is there someone that knows?

Seems you're quite right here:
National Road Traffic Act, 1996
National Road Traffic Regulations, 1999
Chapter VI : Fitness of Vehicles
Part II : Equipment on or in respect of vehicles
201. Warning devices

1) Subject to the provisions of sections 58(3)and 60 of the Act, no person shall operate on a public road –

a) a self-propelled motor vehicle, unless it is equipped with an efficient warning device which is in good working order and, when used, capable of emitting a sound which, under normal conditions, is clearly audible by a person of normal hearing from a distance of at least 90 metres;

b) a pedal cycle, unless it is equipped with an efficient warning device which is in good working order and, when used, capable of giving adequate warning of its approach;

c) a vehicle to which a siren is fitted; or

d) a vehicle to which a device is fitted which emits a sound of which the tone of pitch varies:
Provided that the provisions of paragraphs (c) and (d) shall not apply to a motor vehicle to which an anti-theft device which incorporates a siren is fitted, or to a fire-fighting vehicle, a rescue vehicle, ambulance or vehicle driven by a traffic officer in the carrying out of his or her duties, or to a vehicle driven by a person while engaged in civil protection as contemplated in section 3 of the Civil Protection Act, 1977 (Act No. 67 of 1977).
