Gen2 to Gen3 Upgrade ???

I don't need 2 cars anymore. I want to sell my gen2 pajero and passat and get a gen3 Di-D.
I have found a fairly decent one in East London going for a price that may allow me to break even on the deal.
I am still negotiating and need to take a second look at the vehicle as the first was a bit rushed. Also need to see the service records for the cam chain tensioner service item.
I must say that the car impressed me tremendously. It pulls effortlessly and smoothly with the auto tip box. You only notice the speed when you look at the speedo. I also like that it only does 2500 rpm @ 120km/h.
Here are a few pics of what may be to come. A 2001 model with 265'000km.
I'll be open to offers for my Gen2 Pajero.

Pikanini,
If looks could kill, then that car would be a mass murderer.
If you are not very familiar with the Gen3's, then they will impress you very much.
Your dad will be the first to tell you that if a car was looked after in the body and interior departements, then why would the engine dept have been abused. The opposite is also true, ofcourse.
Keep us posted.

I see the factory roofrails are gone and replaced by runners. Is there a possibility of it having a roofrack go with it as well?

the immediate things I picked up was
immaculate leather interior with WORKING electric seats
smooth autobox
rear diff lock - I presume not traction control then
seat heaters - probably never gonna use them
deceptive performance - never knew the gen3's could hurry like that
engine runs smooth and quiet - I know dad's Di-D sound well so my ear was trained there.
brake pads were low
aircon not working
shimmy in wheel at highway speeds (my boss's used to do the same and balance and wheel alignment sorted it)
I told the dealer that he needs to sort the brakes, aircon and wheel alignment problem otherwise I'm not interested. He currently has the car in the workshop to sort it out. I also mentioned that I might want some BFG's worked into the finance deal and he said that won't be a problem.

Self retracting arial also seem to be stuck in the up position. Might be broken or only in need of a good clean and some carbon(?) dust dry lubrication.

Also make sure the retracting folding third row seats, with headrests, are included.

Methinks this 2001 model pre-dates the roofrails, but I agree it does look as if there was a roofrack in this cars history. Worth finding out if it is for sale somewhere.

Nice looking car, 4ePikanini. The Gen 3 is a brilliant car in my book, being a true allrounder without resorting to too much high tech trickery to achieve it. It can be as comfortable as a limousine and has surefooted, safe handling that seems almost out of character for an SUV that can also give a brilliant account of itself in the rough stuff.
The early GLSs did not have traction control. Instead they got a brilliant Torsen limited slip rear diff that can also be locked using air pressure supplied by a little compressor.
I also think this one should have had roof rails. It is only the very early 2000 ones that were still brought in by Samcor that did not have these nor front fog lamps, as far as I know.

Great car, and looks like you found a good one.
I bought my 2001 Gen 3 (3.5 manual) about six months ago. Have done the better part of 20 000km without so much as a hint of a problem. Supremely safe and comfy on the road, and very capabale and (dare I say it) comfy off it. As the other guys pointed out it's got a rear locker and no roof rails.
Interesting to note the slight ding on the rear bumper ... carbon copy of the same on my car. I'd say the distance between the towball and the dent is exactly the same as the distance between the drawbar and the nosecone on a stock Ventertjie
One other advantage of an early Gen 3 is that they age very well and still look fresh ... Pajeros aren't exactly main stream and few people outside the 4x4 community follows model changes. If the car looks as good in the metal as it does on the pics you will frequently be asked if you bought it new.
