Can not get it into Low range

My1996 Gen 2 LWB will not go into LR. It goes in 4wd easy but as soon as you try to shift the lever to the far left, no chance. Then it does not want to go forward. I do not want to force it. The car is stationary and in neutral still no joy. The "Pajero fundi" in PTA tried and said I must pull the gearbox. Why? Is there any other options before that?
The clutch and engine was replaced, could something happened then? Can it be done from the top?

Dumb question (and I apologise if it seems condescending) but I assume you have had it in Low Range before? If not you need to put downward pressure on the lever before shifting it all the way to the left and forward.

Hi Renier
I've also encountered a similar fault with my Gen 2, and the problem was some part that had broken inside. I'd previously tried to sort the problem out, by reconditioning the clutch master & slave cylinders, had the clutch fork pin lengthened, and also renewed the clutch kit.
Ended up with the only alternative, to drop the g/box and have the entire box serviced at the same time (synchros included). It now work like a charm
It is a reasonably expensive undertaking, but when considering, that you intend engaging L/R, you can't afford to be let down.
My opinion is to take it directly to a g/box-transmission specialist, instead of a general mach, so as to eliminate a third party's handling commission, as I was unfortunate to have experienced.
Good fortune
