Not changing gears on AT box

I have a 95 GLX 3.0 Automatic Pajero. Recently the box would only change from 1st to 3rd - was told it could be the TCU that's faulty or maybe sensors (haven't been able to check these yet). Yesterday it wouldnt move to 3rd or even engage reverse. Car now only goes into 1st.
Does anybody know what this may be? I have done a bit of reading and it may be anything from the speed sensor to the TCU.
How do I check this?
Would appreciate any feedback on this.

Craig,
Mechanically, I an rather useless, but I do know that the first (and cheapest) check should be your gearbox oil - especially if she has been standing for a while.

That's what I would do.
Check the board (search function) for oil suggestions and volumes. When you drain, check the condition of the old oil - a muddy sludge may indicate that it got water - which is fatal for the box, and will need expert attention. If it is only dirty, it may be the cause of erratic changing, and also gives you a clue of the quality of service previously received...
Hope this helps!

Hey Anton,
Drained the transmission fluid yesterday - looked very dark, but not sludgy. Replaced it in any case and let the car idle quite a while. I took the car around the block to see if I have all gears again, still nothing. Car only shifts to the 1st gear. Reverse gear still not activating - almost like its put into neutral.
I saw all the sensors on the bell housing, but didnt have a spanner that size to remove and inspect. Anything you guys think I am missing or need to check?

(To me, the workings of auto boxes is a "dark art").
These transmissions are very robust and the fault is usually in the "control" side.
I would have taken it to auto transmission specialist for a diagnosis, and then to a second one for a second opinion.

Thanks Gerhard - appreciate the feedback.
Can anyone suggest someone in the midrand area? I can drive it there, but no gear change or reverse available.

Craig,
You may want to talk to Freek at MITSPRO first. He will probably understand the symptoms, and will be able to help / direct you. Keep a sample of the drained oil handy...
One of the members recommended him here:
Pajero Workshop Recommendations: MITSPRO VEHICLE SERVICE CENTRE.
