3000 V6 Valve Stem Seals

Hi,

I need to renew the valve stem seals on my Shorty in the near future. Its a 3000 V6 Gen 2 with 172K on the clock. Its using oil and is smoking a bit when you put foot. Is this all that can be wrong because of the smoking?

Can I do it myself and how to I go about it?

What else should I look for or do whilst conducting this job?

Thanks

Renier

Renier,

Here is a post telling you how to "analyse" a smoke problem: Got Smoke - Test the cause like this...

Hope it helps.

Renier,

I replaced my previous 3.5V6's valve stem seals at around 200,000km. It smoked heavily after prolonged periods of idling (like driving in slow traffic) and especially when accelerating thereafter. Once you are on the open road the smoking would stop.

I am not sure about the 3.0V6, but it was recommended that the heads on the 3.5V6 be removed in order to replace the seals. I insisted that they not do this, but replace the seals with the heads in place, which they did - after some moaning.

It's a lot of work, but if you have the time, tools and know how - you can probably do it. It was to much hassle for me, so I rather paid a guy. While you are at it, replace all the tensioner pulleys etc., maybe even gasflow the head  Now that will be worthwhile.
