What is the unit underneath the car at the right rear with insulated tubing?? Is this the rear aircon unit? If yes, how is it driven being so far away from the engine?? I'm just curious!!

it isn't driven by the engine. It is just a second evaporator box with a fan.

if the rear fan isn't working the evaporator gets so cold within a few seconds that the thermal coupling bypasses the expansion valve or orifice tube making it null and void as far as "energy" use goes.

Jip, that's why I hang around here, instead of having to page through pages of
  • brand-bashing (SPS)
  • arguments(testosterone)
  • insults(testosterone)
  • drivel(boredom/lack of attention at home)
:D

Haha, too true.

How do you know if that back aircon is working as it should, what checks can you do? Any maintenance or filters that need to be cleaned at the back?

I recently topped up the gas on my aircon to within spec and it works marvelously at the front, but less well at the back. The air at the back (once you realise cold only comes out the top and warm under the seats) is cooler, but nowhere near as cool as the front. I assumed this is probably the way it's meant to be, is it?

I suspect the rear aircon won't work as well as the front. You can try and open the plastic and clear some dirt and debris.

I cleaned my front pollen filter and the difference was night and day. I haven't looked into the rear a/c. Maybe it's time. :?

Hi Marius

I actually read that thread a while back after you linked to it somewhere. Cleaned mine under water as well. Definite improvement, especially through the side vents in the front dash. Wasn't insanely dirty, but did have loads of leaves and insects and the likes in it which affected airflow.

Thanks

The pollen filter is for "bunny huggers" and softies.
What's wrong with fresh air, which includes a bit of pollen , leaves, bugs etc?
It's a 4x4! I open the window as much as possible when I drive slowly.

Take out the filter !

I suppose now is not the right time to confess to wearing a dust mask whenever I open the window. I once saw a famous performer get off an aircraft wearing one, and I have been doing so ever since.
