I have been watching the comments on what tyres to buy, but I want to tell you what my specific use of my Pajero is and then want some ideas from people who know better than me.
I have Grabbers AW. Great for water and sand driving. I have used them up the Matroosberg and they did OK. The guys with the AT or MT did better. I use the Pajero very little. About 1000km per month. Of that 60% on tar, 30% on dirt (sand, bit of rock, bit of water) and 10% more severe 4x4 (e.g. Matroosberg dry, wet and with snow).
I have been very happy with the Grabbers. As far as I know all the Landies come out with Grabbers now and I have seen a lot of Fortuners with them on. Not sure if they also now come out with Grabbers.
Thinking of putting on BF Goodrich AT. I have heard good things about it and some people I know say they are great. Also fairly well priced. I am price sensitive, I want value, not cheap. My Brother had Coopers and he has now put on BF AT. He is very impressed. Was not that happy with the noise on the Coopers.
I have also been told to look at Duelers. I know nobody I can ask on that front.
Some advice please.
If you look after them BFG's are one of the cheapest per km that money can buy. They are all round a great performer with their key aspects being the thick sidewall and the great mileage return.
My Dad only believed in his deulers. Deulers aint bad if you do 70% tar and 30% dirt.
i do about 2500 to 3000 km a month (only work and back) with the 96 isuzu and thats 98% highway and 2% dirt road and i feel very comfortable with them between me and the road.
i had Wranglers put on my Pajero (cash flow issues) in February and it seems i might have to change them before the year is over. I will replace them with BF's when i do change because of the regular 4x4 tracks i visit

Sorry - cant agree... refer my previous posts on this here and other fora. Hankook will beat BFG hands down on this.4ePikanini wrote:If you look after them BFG's are one of the cheapest per km that money can buy. Must agree with Simon. Hankook is excellent value for money.
Why not read some reviews? All the reviews I've read have placed the Hankook AT-M above BFG AT.
My 2c.
Nico.

Very interesting feedback. Someone told me that I should look at Tera Trac and Hankook. But, not knowing the brands I merely laughed it off. I did see someone on one of the international Pajero forums having Hankook, which looked like MT tyres. Now my question is. I do not like tyre noise. Some years ago, took off Pereli tyres off my car because they made too much noise. How does the BFG and Hankook compare on tyre noise. I guess the Hankook are very well priced and I take it from you all that they are good tyres, otherwise you would not tell me about them, but I want them to be quiet also.
I read a review on the Wranglers compared to Grabbers and the review was not great for Wranglers. BFG get very good reviews. I will check out the reviews on Hankook.
Thanks for the info, if you have any other suggestions, let me know.

I had BF AT on my pajero and now I have duelers, much of a muchness between the two in general but in the wet the duelers lose their grip and it is slip and slide braking if a taxi sees anyone on the side of the road. I was not impressed with the mileage I got from the bfs but in retrospect the next set will be BF again

Some people are wise, some people are otherwise

that's why I said "one of the" and not THE best. It is really difficult to compare anyway as each set is driven differently on different vehicles with different suspension and different rotation maintenance etc.
I recently put BFG on my pajero. The Hankooks were R200/tyre cheaper so I went with the BFG's.
I like Hankooks as well. They look good and give good service on one of the company vehicles.
I'm happy with the BFG and if someone buys hankook or some of the others I'm sure they'll be happy too.
I think there is more life to be had from any tyre with proper care than what the manufacturer can get out of production anyway.

Having had both BFG and Hanook's on my Paj I can make direct comparisons...
On Road: Hankook superior tyre by far. Better handling (especially in the wet), better ride quality and quieter.
In Sand: Again Hankook wins hands down. Can deflate to lower pressures than BFG, and not as stiff as BFG
Off Road, pretty much of a muchness, perhaps BFG a tad better.
If one looks at a 80/20 ratio of roads (including gravel) and offroad, IMO the Hankook is considerably better value for money. When I bought the Hankooks they were around R600 cheaper (each) than the cheapest deal I could find on BFG.

PS : Who deals with Maxxis?
I found them great on my gen2 and I'm sure they also give good mileage for the price. I couldn't find anybody in East London that could source me Maxxis?
