Rear Wheel Loud Clanck Noise

Hi Guy's,
I have a a technical question :geek:
Maybe some guru can help here.
evey so often when pulling away from start reverse or forward and sometimes turning a hear this loud clack noise at my right rear wheel. I have taken off the wheel and caliper as well as the brake disc but could see no fault. I also ahve no oil leaks on seal side. I have picked up a light humming sound at 60 to 80 km/h but nothing at higher speeds.
Any possibilities to have a look at?
I also noticed a previous comment on a clacking/rattling sound coming from right driver side and so far determined that it can only be from the steering as the it seems the bush or bushes are worn . Is this a big job to replace ? :geek:
I have felt that the knuckle have some loose rattling and think therefore that the problem can be there.
Is there anything in the steering box itself that can be loose? :geek:
I have replaced all ball joints on front suspension as well as steering links and the pitman arm.
Any suggestions will help to determine the cause of this loud clack noise. I am scared that it might be from the sideshaft or possible emminant wheel bearing failure?
Thanks
Kind Regards

Hi there

Depending on the model, I am afraid you may be looking at a wheel bearing issue. I had the same issue, but on the front. It started making the same noises, but i still drove it from Pretoria to East London and back, but broke down just short of Bloem with a total collapse of the bearing. Still managed to nurse it all the way to Bloem, where I was stuck for two days sourcing the parts.

In short, i would replace the bearing to start off with. I am not sure about your model, but mine has a "sealed" unit and is a complete bearing and hub assembly. It is very easy to replace and can be done in about 30 minutes. It is rather pricy though, at around R2500 each.

Rather safe than sorry, and if it turns out to be something else, you csn still keep the old one as spare. Best of luck and let us know the outcome once fixed...add some pics as well of the reparation.

Cheers

Hi Jotto,
Thanks for the reply.
I have 99 Blister Fender 3.5.
I will in due time start stripping and have a look see.
I do have a Heyns Manual and have downloaded some info from this site at the manuals section.
I have never attempted do a job like this but in saying a would have expected to change all the ball joints on my front suspension as well and so far so good no glitches. The car is running as straight as an arrow. I did change the front wheel bearings though and it seems a bit easier than the rear.
Will keep you posted
Kind Regards

Sorry if I am stating the obvious, but make sure the diff-locks are disengaged...
