Gen3 - Power steering

On my way home today the power steering went "Bye-Bye" damn, that Gen3 is hard to turn with out any assist.

Got home jacked it up and started looking. No fluid left in the reserve tank filled it up, started the Pajero and found the boot rubber has a tear and pouring out of it.

Guess some of the seals or O-rings had it done for. Any one else had some or sort same issue and can maybe give me the shock of what this repair will cost me? :(

I'm not sure about the fix but I wouldn't recommend using the jack stand under the sway bar. The stabilizer links weren't designed to carry that full weight.

Lucky there were no weight on the jack stand. it could slide in and out with out touching. ;) full weight were on the trolley jacks and the jack stand under the passenger door :)

Okay, so Prelim cost is about +-R1800 for a rack and pinion overhaul at the dealers (Midrand and Rustenburg) the Seal replacement kits is about R160. But need to take it in to get an official quote. Time seems as they say may take about 3 and half hours

Also if i do it via the dealers SA Warranty will cover the cost up to R2250.

The other quote in town R4700 and it will take 2 days :o

Will have more clear detail later when i get the official quote.

   Knew it was to good to be true. Stealers official quote is R21000

They dont fix the problem. They replace it. The Oil pump and rack and pinion assembly they replace because it "might" have been damage. took them all but 5min to give me a quote ;) hows that for speedy service

What was the final Moolas counted up?

Glad you got it back, does the steering feel any different than before the pump went south?

For my account R1812.50 VAT Inc
For SA Warranty account R2937.50 VAT Inc
Total R4750.00

I took it to RTB Wheel alignment centre. Great Job and they phoned me to keep me up to date about delays and what not and have not. And dont expect to find the owner in his office or that he will come to the desk. you can find him at the back in the workshop behind the bench with grease covered hands working. :D

They reconditioned the Power steering rack (oil seals and o-rings). The Power steering pump was still in good working order and didn't need to be replaced.

and it feels as smooth as before.
