Gen1 Newbie needs advice

Hi. Just bought a '91 Gen1 LWB Pajero and would like some advice please.
1. Where around Durban can I buy a bash plate?
2. I have the original 215/80/15's on, to what size can I go on the same rims, that will have no negative effect? (The originals looks really really small...)
3. The previous owner removed the jump seats, I want to put them back. When they are in an upright position which way will the passengers be facing? Backwards, forwards or each other?
That's it for the time being.
Thanks in advance.

Cobus,
Welcome!
Just a few questions:
- Are you sure it is a Gen1? The Gen1 was replaced by the Gen2 in 1989/90 (in different markets). Post a photo and we will know.
- Which engine? 2.5 TD / 3.0 V6?
The seats face forward.
Feel free to ask, I have a 1989 Gen1 LWB, so I could possibly help.
Gerhard

Hi Gerhard,
The car was first registered in RSA in '91, probably a grey import by the looks of it.
The engin has been changed to a 2007 Huyndai 2.7 Diesel as it basically just bolted on with no hassle. I want to change it to a 3l V6 later on. But, if the future wife and I like doing the 4x4 thing I will probably flog it and get something new. This is basically a cheapie test vehicle!
I will most probably ask some more stupid questions, like how to operate the 4wd system. I know that I can't shift to 4wd on the fly like most other 4x4's, have to stop, change and roll backwards?? Can I change between 4H and 4L on the fly and what are the max speeds for each of these?
I have a pic attached (or at least attempted to), it looks very square, hence my conclusion that it is a Gen1.
Thanks for the advice!

That is a Gen 1.
Won't you place a pic of the front wheel hub? Some came with "auto-locking hubs" and some need to be locked from the outside.

The previous owner told me to roll backwards for a few meters after changing from 2H to 4wd so that the front hubs can lock. I assume that it is auto locking? Tried it when the pic was taken and had pull on all fours.

That would be the case. Auto locking requires some wheel turn to engage. Look here:

Cobus, I typed a long response but it got lost, somehow!
It is definitely a Gen 1! In my opinion the best value for money Pajero, ever!
Why change it for anything else? It will go 99% of places most SUVs go. They are built like bull-dozers!
You will never recover the costs of the V-6. The 2.7 Hyundai engine is perfect for the Gen1.
The 4WD system is pre-SuperSelect, so you have to stop before selecting 4H or 4L. I used to change to 4H at low speeds (<20 km/h) by ensuring there is no strain on the drive train and double-clutching the transmission. Better to stop, though.
The hubs are auto-engaging (and brilliant!) - no getting our in the middle of a bog-hole to turn locks!
They engage automatically, but to DISENGAGE, you put the transfer case in 2H and then reverse a few meters (5-20, depending on how 'loose' the hubs are). If you listen carefully, you will hear the hubs disengage.
(try it on a piece of gravel road, with the windows down).
Once you know your Pajero, you will know immediately if it did not disengage.
Enjoy it, it's a classic!
PS What did you pay for it?

Thanks for the info Gerhard!
So, just to be sure, I do not need to reverse when selecting 2H to 4H (or 4L) as the front hubs will lock itself, but I need to reverse after I select the 2H option after driving in 4wd to unlock them again?
The Wife (2b) and I are going on our first expedition this weekend to the Berg, will probably do Sani Pass while we are up there!
After bargaining down the previous owner's price and spending a few bucks on a major service and getting her through COR (new tyres, tie rod ends and wheel bearings) she cost me R40k on the road. Maybe a bit over priced for her age, but not bad considering the good condition that she is in.
Regards...

LEKKER!
Remember the passports - the best part is on "the other side".
I wonder whether road works commenced to tar the pass??
Hopefully not
