Pajero Gen 3 suspension upgrade
Hi everyone,

My 2001 3.2 Did LWB is approaching 225000km. I have contemplated for some time upgrading the suspension and read most of what I could find on this forum and 4x4community.

My Pajero feels/looks low. Although I am not sure, I believe it still has the original coils and I'm pretty sure they have sagged quite a bit. Shocks are Monroe - not sure about their condition.

I have gone in various directions with my thinking - ironman, OME, spacer. Currently towing 'n light trailer. Dual battery system but standard bumpers.

After all I read I decided to fit OME coils and keep normal shocks (until they're worn) (according to discussions the differents shocks's lengths vary very little). Got quotes form Safari Centre and others. They reckon you cannot just do coils, but have to do shocks as well (apparently you can just do shocks, but not vice versa). My only deduction is that this is due do shocks and coils not being paired. Apparantly not matching coils and shocks also affects the guarantee of the coils. (This is actually a deduction which may be faulty - read it in Wegry with their Hilux project - but the fact they mentioned was leaf springs and not coils. Don't know if that makes a differentce to guarantee.)

First alignement centre also said the same, but didn't know that Gen 3 had all round coils - therefore not sure how familiar they are with this particular suspension and effect of changes. Same specialist suggested fitting softer ironman "sports" coils in rear and normal in front. He was convinced aftermarket shocks have more length and would increase wheel travel. I am not convinced after reading in detail discussions on this.

I have read about rear sagging under load if coils are to soft, bumpy ride if shocks/coils are too hard, possibly making (already bad) wheel travel worse.

I have seen ads about the Gabriel HDP's and considered pairing them with OME/Ironman coils.

Bottom line is - I'm confused as what to do. Obviously spending R12-R13K on an older vehicle is a lot.

What do I fit (main objective is to improve clearance, hopefully without negatively affecting wheel travel and articulation). Improving load carrying capability would help if I decide tot fit roofrack / tow heavier trailor.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - hoping to clarify things and not becoming more confused

Have you also had a chat to Darryll and Len at Mikem Suspensions? (Your ref: Wegry with their Hilux project)
They are in Jhb and CT.

That's interesting. Johann at 1st Alignment replaced my whole suspension 2 years ago with OME on my 2005 DiD LWB. Both Shocks and Coils.

Re: Pajero Gen 3 suspension upgrade
Hi,

I spoke to someone at Mikem (Tumela I think). He said they have a progressive coil for the Pajero rear only. They supply Bilstein shocks, but bit expensive at around R2k each.

Jaco_n - heard good things about Johann at first alignment. He reckoned the biggest difference between Ironman and OME is price and reckon they come from the same factory. His consideration was value for money. Apparently the heavy duty Ironman coils are very hard.

What is your experience with your OME ? Do you have heavy shocks and coils duty front and rear ? Any significant sagging after 2 years ? Do you carry extra weight eg. bumper replacement, roofrack. What would you advise ?

Got a quote at Autoquip today on Ironman shocks and coils (sports coils not heavy duty). Coming in around R10500. This makes the price difference between OME (Safari centre / 4x4 Megaworld) around R2000.

Not sure if you have seen my post on this matter.

Iron man and Old man Emu is definately not the same quality, when I fitted.

Personally I would go for coils from a place like Van Zyls spring works and new shocks from the agents, but if you have the money go for OME.

Re: Pajero Gen 3 suspension upgrade
Hi Cats,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I read your thread when doing research and was concerned about the ironman shock quality. Also have heard mainly good things about OME. If I do fit OME, which coils / shocks would you advise ? (heavy / medium)

I am willing to gove the new Gabirel Safari HDP a try - but sounds like they're definately not a cheaper option. Comes in somewhere between Ironman and OME shocks. Then may as well stick to OME's good reputation. Will geat a quote on stock shocks from the agents as well.

Does anyone know about quality springworks manufacturors in Cape Town. I've read about one specific company (can't remember name now, but will recognize it), but a few people have complained about their coils sagging within few months after fitting.

Re: Pajero Gen 3 suspension upgrade
Hi Wessel

Not sure about CPT for the coil springs, but can get it up here at Pretoria Spring Sales, speak to Jan. I can ship it for you to my warehouse in CapeGate or one of my stores at Canal Walk or N1 City for free. My new springs all round (4) cost me R2500 and that was for the 50mm lift as well. http://pretoriaspringsales.co.za/default.asp

I have now done several of my bakkies as well and have never had any issues with them so far, with many KMs travelled over several years.

Cheers

Hi Johann,

Wow, that's an offer I'll definately consider - this is what this forum is about :) I will however have to consider how I will handle a stiuation should something go wrong (different supplier and fitment company /not being able to physically take vehicle to springworks if I encounter problems in future). Will PM you if I decide to go with pretoriaspringsales.

Difficult to say, as it al depends on the load and setup of your vehicle. Mine has plenty extra weight added and as such the HD worked for me, but does make the ride a lot firmer. Lift is the same on all of them.
