I am very lazy when it comes to stopping at a servcies station and put it of for as long as possible. I reckon I might found the limit yesterday. On my way to filling up I could feel the old lady gulping around corners but I managed to get to the pump under my own steam (diesel). I have regularly put in up to 98 liters but this is an new alltime high

- Proof

I drove around with a jerry can to test the limits a bit. Imagine my surprise to find that my tank only takes about 88 litres. I know its supposed to be 95, so what's going on? Its also a 2001 gen 3 petrol.
At least the on board computer agrees with that figure. When its says I have 0km left, it normally takes about 85 litres.

You might have a dent in your fuel tank. Take of the plastic 'protection' cover and have a look see. If you bumped it somewhere in the past it will push the protective cover and the tank in. The plastic cover will however pop back to its original shape. The 2000-2007 3.2DiD LWB diesel only take 90litres by the way. Not sure if the petrol is different.
To get back on topic - I have recently put in 127.08litres of diesel in my 3.2 Did and it wasn't even completely empty

, but I have a longrange tank fitted

. You must be ready for the shock and a big garage card, the first time you fill it after installation, as it is a bit of a heart stopper!

Hi,
I was under the impression that the Gen 3 LWB Diesel has a tank size of 90l....
How then is it possible to put 100 litres in.
I must be honest, if this happened to me, I would argue that the pump is not calibrated properly and it would be a huge scene and SWAMBO hiding somewhere ashamed of her husband..
Cheers

Hi Skillie,
My platkar also goes over the specified tank size too (and at various garages too, so not a single garage) and that is on a Golf and Polo, so the Pajero is not that far off actually.
Not sure where it is accounted but can imagine the pipes, the filler to the tank, probably some airvalve somewhere in there too (I know on the old Corollas you can get almost 10 litres more just by opening an airvavle very handy but dangerous) and came in pretty handy a few years back in Zimbabwe getting to Kariba, weren't allowed to take fuel in containers into country at that stage. The Injection system surely has some fuel as well, so is possible to fill more than the actual tank size in my opinion.

I've heard that 'gunk' (the technical term I believe) accumulates at the bottom of the tank, thus its not good to use the last bit in the tank.
So wont it reduce injector life if you drive with your tanks to these levels? although i suppose if you do it all the time there wont be any gunk buildup

Most diesels have extra capacity other than stated. This is planned from the manufacturer as running out of diesel is very damaging to the pump.
DO NOT stretch your luck. Running out of diesel is very bad for the pump and in some cases fails the first time you run out of diesel.
