Shocks

So heres a question for the suspension fundis...

I have been having a bit of a bumpy ride of late - thought I had it sorted when I found the bolts holding the body to chassis to be loose on the front but its back.

Whilst fiddling underneath it dawned on me to check the shocks and I found the drivers side to be loose. When I say loose I mean I was able to turn the nut with my fingers. So I hauled out the 17 flat and cranked it a few times - its one of those self locking nuts so theoretically its shot or it was never tightened properly in the first place.

The passenger side wasnt finger loose but was easily turned with the spanner. I know they have little rubber tensioners between the body and the top of the shock but my question is, how tight should they be??

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Terry

Ps. The shocks are std quickfit type replacement jobs - nothing fancy - yes I know I should have a good aftermarket shock like OME, Ironman, Camill etc etc but thats not the question and I cant afford 12k for a set of OME's right now :(

Hi Terry

You don't want any movement on those mountings so 1/2 turn before it strips is fine  On a serious note, if you have movement it creates friction and the possibility of dirt entering the equation and making a grinding paste is not a pleasurable thought. Check the condition of the rubbers and replace if shot that is one of the quick fix tips that people do not tell you about. Autozone have a selection of polyester bushes and it might be a worthwhile option to change to these ones as they last much longer and provide a better mounting.
