Gen3 vs Gen 4 (and SWB vs LWB)
Hi,

I am thinking of "upgrading" from my Gen 3 SWB to LWB in the next year... so I'm wondering about Gen 3 vs Gen 4 :)

I have a few questions with regards to the differences... Can anyone help to confirm the following:
  1. Gen 4 LWB cannot fit 16" rims? 17" is the smallest.
  2. Gen 3 LWB GLS (2005, 2006) has fake wood trim in interior? Is this on all LWB GLS models?
Anyone have anything good / bad to say about upgrading from a Gen 3 to Gen 4?

I'm not wild on the fake wood trim - would prefer the silver trim as on my SWB Gen 3. I was hoping to re-use my 2nd set of 16" rims with M/T tires on the new Pajero - but I think that'll only work on a Gen 3.

Cheers
Greg

Re: Gen3 vs Gen 4 (and SWB vs LWB)
the earlier 2007-2009 GLS LWBs came with the plastic inlay which looks pretty good compared to the fake wood.

Not sure about the tyres - think the 17-inch constraint is due to the new brakes

Greg,

I'll be following this thread with interest. I'm also looking at moving on to a late model LWB. I'm prepared to consider the GLS, GLX or Sport.

The current standing is that for the same price I can choose between a new Sport, a k20km 2010 GLX or a k65km 2009 GLS. The choice is almost impossible.

To me it's a "no-brainer".

k65km GLS (as long as it is a Di-D ;) )

SWB to LWB is a big difference if you have more than two bodies to accomodate, so this will already be a big difference!

On your questions:
1> Correct. Gen4 cannot take 16" rims in LWB format. Neither GLX or GLS format will work. Tried it on Kai's Gen4 in my driveway and can confirm firsthand that it will not fit. Not even 16"steel rim with different off set will fit the front of the Gen4 Lwb.
2> Not sure, but on the 2007 onwards Gen4 GLS versions this was an optional extra as well as tan coloured leather, so you might find it on some Gen4 models as well. In Gen4 the wood actually look pretty good in my opinion.

I had both a Gen3 and Gen4 at one stage and to me ,at that stage given that the Gen3 was paid up and the Gen4 cost me a big monthly payment, did not make sense to keep the Gen4. There just was not enough things "different" enough to me (remember this only my personal opinion, so take with pinch of salt) to warrant the Gen4 with its added cost over the Gen3. The one thing I do miss from the Gen4 on my Gen3 GLS is the HID lights. So I sold the Gen4 again and got a more affordable platkar as a daily driver for my wife.

Having said that I weekly scan the Autotrader in wait for that bargain value Gen4 GLS. But I don't think I will ever sell my Gen3 and have made piece with that now

Re: Gen3 vs Gen 4 (and SWB vs LWB)
Hi Everybody,

I also have the 5 year "itch" and at times am thinking about trading my 2004 3,8 GLS for a Gen 4 3.8 GLS. Can anybody comment on the difference in power (±150kw vs ±180kw)and how did you experience the difference? Any comments on the fuel consumption?

After "thinking (dreaming) of a newer Pajero and then coming back to the real world, I realise I must be daft to consider such a swop. My Pajero has been modified for travelling to our liking so why start from scratch?

HELP or give valid advice.

Cloyd.
Re: Gen3 vs Gen 4 (and SWB vs LWB)
Thanks for the feedback :)

Hmmm... I really love my SWB... but the extra space of the LWB will be beneficial for overlanding :)

Okay, so the minimum rim size is confirmed at 17" for the Gen 4.

Just need to confirm the interior of the Late Gen 3 LWB - all have wood trim? I hope not!

Also, do the 2007 / 2008 Gen 4 DiD have the same engine as the Gen 3, or is it common rail? Can it run on 500ppm diesel occasionally in the bush?

Re: Gen3 vs Gen 4 (and SWB vs LWB)
Greg,

All Gen4's run the common rail motor. The 500ppm is not a problem, but the extra sulphur will contaminate the oil more and you should then change the oil at 7500km.

4ePajero,

Not as simple as that, I'm afraid. Not even the DiD option is that obvious. I have never enjoyed a motor as much as this 3.8V6. I know there is a 2010 very low km 3.8V6 LWB out there that was abandoned by a stingy owner.

BUT, before anything can happen, must my buddy first sell his Merc platkar and give me lots of money for my shorty
Re: Gen3 vs Gen 4 (and SWB vs LWB)
Thanks Roelf...

Just looked at lots of interior pics on Autotrader... all the LWB models have the interior wood trim :( I wonder how difficult it would be replace with the black :)
