Morning all,

Having nearly finished replacing my discs and pads in my 2002 GDi (after much hastle trying to get the front disc small locating screw out of both), i have noticed a small tear in the front lower suspension arm ball joint !!!

As an interim measure i am putting some grease in and effecting a temporary repair until i get chance to change the unit.

Has anyone got a step by step guide or can point me in the right direction on how to approach this, it look complicated and i am anticipating having to strip most of the suspension components out to get at the unit !!!

All help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

There are a few DIY tasks which I have done, but have learned to rather have them done by a workshop, which has the appropriate tools (and 4-poster lift :D ).

Replacing suspension ball joints is one of them!
I have done a few, but I think I have done enough of them.

If you insist, do upper and lower at the same time.

Attached find PDF file for the front axle.

Remember to have the alignment done when you are finished.

Hi 4e,

Thanks for the schematic, i have the same one and was thinking the same - i guess you answered my question.

It IS a garage job in reality - i will tackle most things but you have to know your own limits especially when you are working on your own.

Cheers again.

out of interest, is your suspension raised in any way from the factory level?

Hi,

No just standard height, i suspect its just wear and tear thats caused the split.

Been doing some further digging and it may be simpler that i thought to do this job.

I need to get some further information but will post back if i thinks its within the realms of a semi capable home mechanic without the needs for gas torches/presses/welder/4post lifts - because if there is any doubt in my mind mine is going in to the garage - these cars are great but at times can be a pian to fix even simple things.

Cheers

Hello TTR,
Any idea where I can do a good service in Nelspruit area to my 2002 3.5 GDI?
Just bought it coming from Japan.

Senache,

Hi, sorry i cannot help you on this one, i am based in the UK.

Good luck in sorting out the servicing for your truck, they can be tempremental especially on the fuel system with the micro filters and high pressure fuel pumps, try and run on the best quality (highest octane fuel) you can it will help minimise these typical issues.
