Fuel consumption in sand/mud
We're planning a trip to Central Kalahari in March 2012 and my question is relates to budgeting for fuel - in litres. I realise each and every vehicle is different and much depends on load, and driver too, but is there some sort of formula or are there any guidelines in this regard.

Some info:
2 pajeros
Both petrol and both high mileage
SWB (2000)
LWB (1997)

Don't know how much rain the area has already had this summer and I will keep an eye on how much they have in the next 8 weeks.

(I hope this is the correct place on the forum for this question)

Re: Fuel consumption in sand/mud
With a V6 petrol I would be inclinded to budget around 4km/l, even as bad as 3km/l if extremely hot and difficult going.

And if you are towing, probably closer to 3km/l when the going is slow

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll let you know how we go - presuming I haven't had to wade through the sand/mud and fend off lions on my walk to get more fuel . . . .
