Gen 4 Di-D 3.2 AUTO LWB handbrake issue

Hello there pajeroclub forum...been a looooooooong time!

I've noticed that my handbrake doesn't function.

When I put the car in park it rolls then catches on the "Park Gear" rather than the handbrake holding it. Brakes are all fine and the handbrake light comes on. Is it easy to set on this vehicle or do I need to take it in? (Not much of a mechanic - but "technically-minded" enough to overcome most issues...)

Thanks in advance...

Jurgs,

Assuming hre shoes are still ok, which in 90% of the cases tey are as they get very little wear the process is easy.

You can approach this one of two way.

1. Remove the palstic cup holder tray thar sits directly behind/to the side the handbrake.
2. I think you will need a 10mm open ended spanner
3. Adjust the nut inwards to increase the tension on the handbrake cable.
4. Do not go too far and check the rear wheel do not bind when you think you hve adjusted sufficientley.

Option 2.

1. Under the truck on the bottom of each of the rear disc hosing plates are two rubber grommets.
2.Jack the truck up safley
3. Remove grommets and with a flat bladed screwdriver you will see a knurled wheel.
4. Adjust the knurled wheel so that it adjusts the shoes and locks the rear wheel
5. Back of the knuled wheel by about 4 clicks
6. check wheel rotates
7. check handbrake

job done about 30 mins in total.

I did a write up on Gen3 rear disc replacenent its in the downloads section, alos in there is a pdf of the handbrake adjustemnt process.

Hope this helps you.

Cheers

Hi TTR.

I got in there no problem at all. Adjusting the nut inward is very very tight. I've done some adjustment and it does seem to be slightly better. It just feels like it's seriously tight when I turn. Is this normal? If so, I will continue doing it until it's really tight.

The handbrake takes at it's furthest point now, it seems more adjustment would be the answer, just scared I strip something?

sounds like the shoes are worn then. maybe someone had it ill adjusted before and it wore out prematurely.

Jurgs,

I agree with 4e, the nut should only need a slight (perhaps 3mm of inward adjustement).

Depending on how handy you are with spanners i would suggest you check out the wear of the shoes located in the rear disc hub.

Its a relativley simple process on the rears, if you follow my instructions in the downloads section it should be very staight forwards. At least then you can establish if the shoes are worn down and then decide if you want the garage to replace them or do it yourelf (they are quite easy and cheap to do)

Before you start i would recommend that you back off the adjuster you just tightened. It will allow a degree of slack to return on the shoes and enure they contract to allow the disc to smoothly slide off over the shoes.

I would only strip on side, usually the shoes wear realtivley evenley, it is unusal for these to wear down though, i wonder if someone has tightenend the adjuster before and not checked to see if the shoes were binding, they have then simply either worn down because of the rub on the disc or deteriorated through heat build up. It seems odd you have little adjustement left, i assume you can see the thread on the adjuster and its at its maximum limit, ie, its all to the front of the car and you cannot see anything left to pull through, which indicates to me that its been missdjusted in the past. Do not continue to tighten and i would check as i recommend before proceeding further.

On a final note it is also worth checking that you can see all the handbrakes cables are still in place and nothing has snapped, just have a look under the truck and follow the cables down.

Good luck - if you need anything further please ask - hope you get it fixed.
