Extra diesel tank & mudgaurds
Have two questions on my 2009 GLX namely

1.Is it worthwhile to fit an additional fuel tank (re 2 fuel cans on roof carrier) ? ; and

2.Do one get bigger mudgaurds for stones on gravel roads which are deflected by bicycle carrier (Tule on towbar): Have lost my rear window as a result or any other advise ?

Thanks : JohanSBot

Hi Johan,

On the mudflaps, you have a few options to consider, 1 is to extend your mudflaps - see below pics - still need to fit mine, but if you lost a window already, you may need a more serious solution in the form of a full width rear flap - also relatively easy on the Paj - and will be making one in due course as well, which should connect to the rear recovery hooks and have a full cover of the rear, some guys use shad netting as well.

Re: Extra diesel tank & mudgaurds
I like the full width (as on the Dodge 4x4), but without the bling chrome bits! :D

I would make them longer (lower) though, to make sure no stones slip underneath the flaps.

Check that you can't drive over them though, when reversing over eg kerbs!

OT note:
Which direction do stones (which were picked up by the tyres) fly (relative to where they lay on the ground before being run over)?
Forward / backwards?

Re: Extra diesel tank & mudgaurds
I have got some pics of Pajero full width mud flaps somewhere, just can't find them and no bling either, will see if I can find them, I am of the opinion it will be a very easy makeup and use angle iron and connect to the 2 rear recovery hooks, depends on the type of towbar used which will affect the design. Have also seen them connected on a plate to a towbar with square tubing on either side, which worked OK, 1 guy had this when we did the Kaokoland trip, but it didn't make it till the end, it was trashed before the end of the trip so take this into account, the type of terrain you intend driving. I guess the combination of both could serve different purposes.

fvorwards/backwards?

I would suspect forwards unless you are busy accelerating hard, in which case they will go backwards..... I think. :?:

I followed this post with interest in particular the first question regarding the long range tank. I am in two minds if it is worth paying big RR's for almost 50 liters. I have also heard (but needs to be confirmed) that you only gain approx 35 liters from that tank. Any comments will be appreciated.

Stones should fly forward.

Is it not more feasible to manufacture a deflector plate to attach to the bottom of the bike carrier?

I hope to have a "gearbox cover plate" fitted mid Feb. If there is still room under the car for an extra tank, maybe I'll try to rather convert it to a "wood carrying cubicle" .

I agree, spending the around 4k on an extra tank that gives 50l (lets assume it does) is not worth it, especially if you have a roofrack. Jerrycans and roof rack mounts should end up less than a 1k for the equivalent volume of fuel. (and you could up it to 80l on the roofrack if neccessary)

If you dont have a roofrack, it will be more expensive initially, but the versatility and additional space a roofrack gives you makes up more than sufficiently in my mind.

Re: Extra diesel tank & mudgaurds
Hi Guys,

Long range fuel tanks. In the Gen 3 and 4 Pajeros you basically have three choices:

a. The small tank below the holder for the third row seats in the most vulnerable place on a Pajero and with questionable contents> It varies from 35 liters to aprox 50 lit??

b. Jerry cans on the roof that need a roof rack and special brackets and all the effort to get fuel in and out of the "jerries".. You can basically fit as many as you require/like/need.

c. The route that I took. I removed the third row seats and in its place permanently installed a 100 lit tank. It is totally out of harms way, can be connected to the Pajero fuel system or be totally independent with its own pump and filter.
If I want to return my Pajero to its original state it will take less than 30 minutes to remove and fit all the original parts. My car does not have a petrol smell because I use quality filler caps.

Rubber for mud guards.

I found some rubber that I think will be the perfect material for mud guards. See the photos below:

The rubber is available in rolls 1.1m wide. I can buy it per length needed @ R400 per running meter.
