Hi all
I have a 2004 3.2 did SWB pajero...222000k's on the clock.
When driving on a smooth road/highway, i can hear a rumbling kind of noise. I can't pinpoint if it is coming from the front or the rear. I suspect one of the wheel bearings might be packing up.
How does one test to find out which one is actually faulty?
The dealers tell me that they hardly ever replace rear bearings...has anyone had theirs replaced? is this correct?
The cost to replace the 2 x front ones is R4651 plus labour of R 1800 for the set.
Rear ones are is R 5780 plus labour of R 1800 for the set.
Any feedback will be much appreciated...thank you.

Hey Zoobie
Check your CV joints first, they are more likely to go than the wheel bearings. Also might just be tyre noise, have you fitted new tyres recently? Or have a nail or something lodged in the tyre?

Hi Zoobie
The price is about right for the parts, paid the same abouts, but did the replacement myself, it is very easy, just fiddely. I agree with the dealer, wheel bearings dont often go, but mine did for what ever reason, less than a week after I bought it, so I replaced all four, just be be on the safe side, cause it broke down in the middle of the night wnd in the middle of nowhere.
First have the CVs checked, but to answer your question on what sound you get, well it could be a number of sounds, the most prevelent is a whine. Mine did not however, just every now and again it made a sound like going over those stupid speed control 'grids'. " a grrrrrrrt" sound

and then for a thousand km's nothing, then suddenly again, with complete failure after that.
Please describe the sound you hear and I am sure many of the guys here would be able to assist with a possible fault relating to the sound.
Hope this helps. PS, if you need help with the bearings, let me know, I will help you quick.

hi all
thanks for all your responses....tyres have been on the car for almost 70000.
I will have all the bearings changed anyway...good insurance for around R 10k.
Cv joints..well that could be an expensive exercise...I think they quoted me over R20k to do them all..they said you can't just do the cv joints, you have to replace the whole shaft.
will keep you posted if they dind anything.
