GLX vs GLS, Traction Control vs Rear Diff Lock

I am currently looking for a good 2nd hand Pajero. (This forum played a major part in my decision to buy this vehicle) My search is for a 2008 - 2010 GLX or GLS 3.2 DiD LWB. I have noticed that the GLX variant has a RDL, while the GLS model only has traction control. I would like to find out from forum members which one is best and whether the GLS with traction control only has reduced offroad ability? I will be using this vehicle for overlanding excursions (Moz, Nam, Bots etc.) and it will not be used as a daily commuter. Any comments and suggestions would be welcome. Hopefully I will be a "full" member shortly.

For your intended use
"I will be using this vehicle for overlanding excursions (Moz, Nam, Bots etc.)"
I would say that you will seldom if ever need either TC or DL.
Either will suite you just fine.

Consider the other differences between the two (GLS & GLX).
The GLS is more luxurious, and will therefore be a bit more expensive, but that is the one I would go for.

I believe it has VSC (vehicle stability control) but not TC (Traction control for offroad use)

sbotes,

For what it is worth: I would recommend thast you buy the GLS with traction control. T/C works all the time while the D/L in the GLX only works in low-range.

My Pajero has T/C but I decided after one of our trips thsat D/L will make the Pajero even better. I went to the scrappies and bought both the front and read diff of a GLX (different gear ratios that my GLS) and installed both in my Pajero. With my installation I can select D/L in both high range and low range and this installation ptoved its worth in the Namib dunes.

For general information, overseas you can buy a GLS with D/L as an optional extra. There is an owner in Centurion that has one of these.

Over and above the D/L and T/C, the GLS has more luxsuries that the GLX: climate control, speed control, sun roof, leather seats etc.

Cloyd.

Marius, my GLX has full traction control. This was pointed out to me whilst doing the Mitsu off road training in Krugersdorp. I baught the vehicle with the understanding that it has RDL only but you can hear and see the results when you go through the obsticles. I am happy.

Thats awesome! RDL and TC must make it nearly unstuckable!

sbotes,

Go for safety and pick the GLS.

I dare you to find a track where the GLS will fail you in offroad ability. Only an extreme obstacle course will make you prefer the RDL.

Hi,

I have owned two Gen 3 Pajeros. Both GLS. One had RDL and the latest TC.

Even though I still prefer RDL to TC, IMHO the 'disadvantage' of TC in minimal and the vehicle with TC is still VERY capable offroad. I must agree with the other members of the forum that I would prefer the GLS to the GLX, especially for overlanding

Regards,

I’m going to have to disagree with the majority opinion here. I have had both and feel that the D/L works better than the T/C. This is especially true in rough and rocky terrain, where the D/L keeps the wheels turning all the time regardless of how erratic the throttle application is. With the T/C the drive “disengages” if you do not keep a steady foot on the gas pedal. Very difficult if you are bouncing around! As to the luxuries, if you are just going to use it in the bush, go for the GLX. You won’t feel so sorry for it and there is a lot less to break. (Cheaper too) If you are doing long trips on road to get there with just a bit of bush bashing, the GLS is fantastic, top sound system, leather, cruise control and nice aircon!
