Flashing 4 X 4 Indicator lights - HELP
I drive a 2001 3500 V6 GLS with 250,000 on the clock. I can drive around town (all day / week / year) there is no problem but as soon as I drive on the open road (at 100 / 120KPH) after about 30 k's the orange light in the centre of the 4 x 4 indicator starts flashing. If I stop, switch the engine off it resets but will start flashing again after about 30k's.
MITSUBISHI PAARDEN ISLAND have checked it out and can find nothing wrong - all 4x4 functions work.
A friend of mine with a SWB Pajero (similar age and mileage) has the same problem.
Can anyone shed any light on what might be causing this?

double check the vacuum lines and replace the vacuum solenoids between the airbox and the front right headlight.

In the meantime drive it in 4H - that should prevent it from throwing the center orange light.
Re: Flashing 4 X 4 Indicator lights - HELP
I have the exactly the same vehicle and the same problem. I've replaced the 4x4 switches, which solved a number of issues, but not this one. Mitsu did find a small leak in one of the hoses, which made it better, but the problem is still there.

The main cause of what you are seeing is vacuum being lost as the system heats up. This can be caused by very small leaks in the rubber hoses that only start leaking when its hot (as in my case). The only other culprits are the solenoids. I'll replace mine soon to see if that solves it. You can measure the resistance of the solenoids to see if they are within spec. I haven't done that yet.

BTW, if you drive in 4H, you'll see the front lights will start flickering irregularly (not the normal flicker when it engages) after 30km.

Re: Flashing 4 X 4 Indicator lights - HELP
just let the car idle and ask someone to move the stick between 2H and 4H

When going to 2H you should hear BOTH solenoids click. When going to 4H you should hear BOTH solenoids releasing.

Other than that, note the way the pipes go onto them, remove them and try to blow through the pipes - connect 12v to the connectors and try to blow again. The faulty one will be easily recognizable.

Hi All

Mine keep flashing continuously when in 4LLc mode. All four green lights and the centre orange light. What does this mean? Its a 2002 3.5V6 Auto?

Thanks

I found mine does this if you engage 4L and the car is nto in "N" also if the wheels are nto straight after you engage 4L

I found beast way to engage is
Stop
Straighten wheels
Put into Neutral
Put into 4L
Put in Drive
Slowly go forward and keep the wheels straight for a couple of meters until the lights go solid. Same for when going back to 2H or 4H.

Thanks Zeek. I knew I had to stop and neutral before engaging, but was not aware I had to straighten wheels or go straight after that. I will try it later and feedback.

Hi Kevin,

I have a 3.2 DID which had the same problem. It turned out to be the actuator. It is situated behind the front sump guard, looks like a shock absorber with a concertina type hose covering it. Remove the hose and grease the pin (actuator) while someone engages, disengages the four wheel drive. This should solve your problem.

Flashing Orange light after driving for a awhile. Mitusbishi. Replaced all 4 of the 4x4 switches. That sorted out all the problems. Pajero 2001 3500 LWB Manual. Also there is a large fuse that needed replacing it was quite weak after 11 years.

Hi,

I have the same problem with my 2002 V6 3.5, the orange light flashes after a certain amount of KMS, we cant seem to find the problem, we cheked the vacum hoses. Could it be this, when i engage 4x4 going into 4L i dont hear the switch/solanoides engaging? What do you think?

Also will this mean 4L will not be engaging? we off to the Zambezi and i am a little worried as there are no spare switches in zim for this. Does anyone know the correct part number for the 4L switch?

I dont have time to find the problem , is it an issue to drive 800kms with this light flashing?????

Please help out.
