Hi, gen 2 1993 3.5 V6 Pajero auto, for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the shift lever out of park without the key on etc, normally on most vehicles there is a button to push, how is it done on the Pajero?
Cheers, Jeff.

you can't.
Listen carefully at the ignition switch and/or the gearlever. When the ignition is turned on a lock disengages.
It's the same lock that doesn't allow you to take the key out of the ignition unless the car is in Park.
It's a safety feature.

OK, I know that, what I want to know is how to bypass it in a emergency, for instance if the battery is flat and you want to take it out of park to push it etc, every other vehicle I've owned has had a bypass, for instance Nissans have a small red button in front of the shift lever to depress, Honda's have a slot you put the key in.

it is a mechanical system so you use the the tools in the rear door to remove the center console and see what's broken.
I opened mine a few days ago to put some new lubricant on the components as my button was getting sticky.
The mechanism is built extremely tough! I hardly doubt it will ever break to a point that you can't get it sorted on the side of the road. The only thing I can see going wrong is the thing that happened to me where the button gets sticky but that's a simple fix at need as you just remove the gearlever top and manually manipulate the white rod sticking out of the shaft.

is the link between the ignition and gear lock mechanical or electrical? i.e. no battery power, no unlocking the gearbox?

Hi. I own a 1994 Pajero 2,5 diesel. My car got stolen and recovered recently and, when returned, the only damage was to the door- and ignition locks. Whilst replacing the ignition lock, I found a little cable - almost similar to a bicycle brake cable - connected between the ignition lock and gearshift. When you unhook the cable from the ignition lock and push it back into the cable sleeve, the interlock is disabled. Hope this solves your problem.
